COVID-19 Intensive Learning Program

The COVID Intensive Learning Support Program is well under way this term, with approximately half of all Year 7 and 8 students undertaking small group learning to consolidate their reading comprehension skills. Students are enjoying working in groups with their tutors and have been actively engaged in activities to identify the differences between narrative, informative and persuasive pieces of writing. This important skill helps readers to understand the purpose and audience of texts as they are reading.

It is important that students interact with a variety of texts to ensure their text knowledge is wide and deep, so throughout their tutoring sessions, students have been exposed to a range of texts from different subject areas and have been engaged in high quality discussions with their fellow peers and tutors. By reading out loud and listening to their tutor and peers read, students have been increasing their knowledge of language structures and expanding their vocabulary.

Students have also been revising some of the essential skills required for reading comprehension, including skimming and scanning, re-reading, predicting, visualising and summarising. These skills allow students to construct meaning from what they are reading, whilst considering the main idea and author's perspective of a text.

Next term, the program will be shifting focus onto Numeracy in order to increase our students' confidence, skills, and knowledge when working with numbers.
