The Social Inclusion Club meetings are held in B11 during recess on Monday, Week A. The student volunteers have an opportunity to enjoy their recess, play board games, interact and socialise with students who have difficulty maintaining friendships. Interested students are invited to be a member of our club.

I take this opportunity to thank all the current members who always remember to turn up and make each meeting memorable.

Thanks!

Chess Club

In Term 1, the Social Chess Club started back up again on a weekly basis. Between 20-25, students regularly stay back after school on Fridays to dabble in some chess. Although it can be competitive at times, most games are laid back, with students getting a chance to catch up with peers from all year groups. It is good to see our more experienced players showing our younger players some sneaky moves that they can try on their next opponents. In some cases, more gossip or gaming talk takes place than chess action.

The 2021 Chess Season has kicked off, and the KHS Chess Team have hit some form. In week 3 of this term, seven members of the KHS Chess Team travelled to Canley Vale Public School to compete in the Interschool Chess Challenge against other secondary schools. The team came away with a good result, placing 3rd in their heat, out of 9 secondary schools. Adam Seymonsbergen achieved an outstanding 2nd place overall in the individual results out of 65 competitors. The KHS team has qualified for the semi-finals of this tournament later in the term.

In the weekly Metropolitan Secondary Schools Competition that is played on Friday afternoons after school, our 3 teams, Juniors (Year 7 & 8), Intermediates (Year 9 & 10) and Seniors (Year 11 & 12) have achieved some great results. After 4 rounds, our Juniors are sitting in 3rd place out of 8 teams, behind St. Columbus, Springwood and Penrith Selective High. The Intermediates are in a very even group, sitting in 5th place out of 8 with only a few points between 2nd and 6th. This is a huge achievement, with the majority of the players in this group playing their first season of Chess. Their biggest result this season is a 3-1 win over our nearest rivals, Montgrove College. The Seniors are in a small but tough group of KHS, Penrith Selective High, Blue Mountains Grammar School and Richmond High. The team is currently sitting in 3rd behind runaway leaders Richmond, then Penrith. Again, this is a big effort, as half the team are playing their first season of competitive chess and have scored wins in their debut season.

The Social Chess Club is still running while the competition games are being played, so if you want to head down for a bit of Friday afternoon fun, come on down, everyone is welcome.
