HSIE Reoprt

It has been a busy and productive start to the year for the HSIE faculty. We have welcomed Ms Galea to the faculty, and she has been working hard getting to know the students of Kingswood High School.

Our year 12 students are well and truly deep into their HSC preparations. Ms Tan took her Business Studies class to Taronga Zoo for a day of learning about Marketing Strategies, the students had a great day and were able to apply their new knowledge in their Marketing Assessment Task.  Year 12 Society and Culture students are working hard on their Personal Interest Project, whilst our Aboriginal Studies students have completed their Major Project. We have been so impressed by the work ethic of the class and the depth and variety of their projects.  Keep focused Year 12, you are almost there!

Excursions have a vital role in connecting learning to the ‘real world’,  Mrs Chaffey and Year 11 Legal Studies went to the Police and Justice Museum, learning about Sydney’s rich crime history and taking part in a mock trial.   In term 1 our year 10 students were able to go to the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of their Holocaust unit, this is an invaluable excursion we try to run every year. Students have the opportunity to meet and listen to a Holocaust survivor talk about their experiences during and since the Holocaust, this not only deepens the students understanding about the unit, but allows them to create a personal connection, deepening their empathy.   Year 10 Commerce were able to do a Comparison Shopping exercise at Penrith Plaza as part of their Consumer and Financial decision unit, showcasing the importance of comparing goods across retailers in order to get the best value for money. We have more excursion planned for terms 3 and 4 to support the important learning our students are doing in the classroom.
