Principal's Report

NAB Women in Technology Project and STEAM @ MGC

We are embarking upon another project linked to our new Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM) program. Women are under-represented at University and in the workforce in Information Communication Technology careers. Our project with the National Australia Bank is one which plants the idea of possible careers in ICT for Years 9-10 students. The girls involved in the project will be immersed in an experience at 700 Bourke St. This is a ’smart’ e-linked building with computer technology supporting infrastructure, working and meeting places. The students would be exposed to a program of immersion sessions, each led by a NAB “champion” in:

  • Business analysis / CX design§  Innovating with technology / pitching ideas
  • Agile software development / user testing§  Security / cybercrime
  • Data analytics

School Council

In the last Newsletter the important work of School Council was highlighted. Just some examples of the strategic counsel given by Council include:

  • Learning
  • International Student Program
  • Inclusion and Enrolment Policies
  • Community and stakeholder connections
  • Informing DET on State education provision and improvements
  • Discussing new DET policies the school is required to implement
  • Co-curricular programs – rowing, aerobics, dance, instrumental music

We look forward to any new Councilors joining us once the current election process concludes. The ballot closes on Friday 4th March.

2016 House Swimming Carnival

We were all very excited to see the 2016 House Swimming Carnival proceed on Tuesday 1st March after the disappointment of postponement the previous week. The threat to student and staff wellbeing that a 38 degree, UVA 11 day on 23rd February posed to health was too great. Our Arts Captains came up with an excellent rocket ship Instagram photo competition which was a hit with girls and teachers alike. The Carnival atmosphere was amazing and the girls went to so much trouble dressing up, face painting, participating and showing the true MGC spirit in action. Thank you to Mr. Kovassy and all staff who lead such a great day.

Uniform

On Friday, 25th February we held a positive uniform blitz. Students in correct uniform received a raffle ticket to go into a draw for café vouchers. This initiative proved a great success. Thank you to all students who display school pride so symbolically.

Head of School Girls Rowing Regatta

Head of School Girls Rowing Regatta

We wish our Rowing girls the very best of luck for the Head of School Girls Regatta on the Barwon River Geelong from 4-6 March. We are proud of our rowers, no matter where they place, as hard work and determination are part of training alone. Race success is wonderful but not essential to satisfaction in a job well done. Sincere thanks to Rowing Committee President, Shelley Anderson; Treasurer Tony Sullivan; Head Coach Nick Wells and Rowing Coordinator Tonia Douglas-Scarfe for all of the behind the scenes work leading to a great experience for the girls.

Parents' Association

On Tuesday 23rd February the first 2016 Parents’ Association meeting was held 7.30pm in the Staffroom. Many thanks to Gailean Hammond and Sallie Carmen our new co-Presidents. David Ratnaraja; Treasurer Jane Garrow, Secretary and Robynne Smith, Uniform Shop! Sincere appreciation is extended to our out-going co-Presidents Kate Henderson and Megan Barnes. What outstanding leaders and role-models for their daughters and our girls! Kate and Megan worked tirelessly but always with a lot of fun and laughter. Thank you to Sue Williams, outgoing Treasurer- after twelve years at MGC we miss her every day! Thank you to Adrian Gray who has stepped down as Secretary, we wish Adrian every success in following new Tuesday night commitments.

The good news is that a large number of our Year 7 parents joined us. It was wonderful to see them become part of this excellent MGC community.

Sustainability Collective - Moonlight Cinema

Congratulations to the Sustainability Collective under Andrew Vance’s leadership who provided an inclusive and fun event on 19th February, not only for MGC but for the Yarra City area. Every parent I met talked about our great MGC community and how essential it is to the wider learning experiences of our girls. It was an honour to meet rower and para-Olympian Gavin Bellis who inspired rowers and environmentalists alike. We wish Gavin every success in the Rio Olympics later this year. Personal thanks to Ruth and Ron on the BBQ for keeping me on task!

Year 7 Parent Evening

We hope our Year 7 parents and guardians enjoyed the evening on 16th February. It was great to meet so many new and returning members of the MGC community.

Welcome!
