KIOSC

Year 9 students

Our year 9 students had a great day at KIOSC as part of their Geography course exploring food sustainability. The highlight of the day was learning about how bugs could be a great source of protein and then making bug lollipops to eat.

Year 9 students have also been studying new and future technologies. They have spent the last 3 weeks making model electric cars out of softdrink bottles, milk bottle lids and assorted materials.

Year 7 students

Our Year 7 students have been looking into sustainable energy this term. Students have tested their skills designing, making and testing wind turbines with our STELR kits.

Science Week

During Science Week students were able to watch a video on the scientific possibility of Extra-terrestrial life forms and enter a ‘Design Your Own Alien Competition’.

On the Wednesday lunchtime students made their own fidget spinners using glue, hot plastic, ball bearings, lock nuts, play dough and glitter. Most of them worked, with some being more successful than others. Students had to figure out the engineering of the spinner. All learnt – don’t get hot glue in the bearing!

Science Week at Fairhills ended with a Fizzer! Literally! The activity on Friday lunchtime involved students making predictions about a soft drink/Mentos fountain. We had an eruption from the soft drink bottle when Mentos lollies were dropped in. Scientific discussions about fair tests, chemical reactions, gases, volume and variables evolved as a crowd grew in the A block courtyard.

During periods 3 & 4 on Friday 18th, the school participated in a virtual classroom with over 400 schools across the nation. Scientists working in the field of Astrophysics explained their jobs and answered real time questions from the students. Ms Martin’s Year 10 Chem/Physics class and Year 11 Physics students were logged in and had a very interesting, astrophysical experience.

Across the week, the Daily Quiz questions saw students testing their Science knowledge. Winners included Riley Colcott, Connor Roberts and Caylen Zerovnik.

All students who participated received prizes.
