National Walk Safely To School Day

S. Cummings - Stage 3 Assistant Principal

Walk Safely to School Day was first held in New South Wales in 1999 and later became a national event in 2004. The day aims to familiarise children with road safety rules and exercise routines.

On Friday, 19th May, our school took part in the National Walk Safely to School Day. Families, students and teachers were invited to meet at St Johns Park, next to St Johns Park Bowling Club, at 8:30am to walk safely together to school .

At the park, there were teachers dressed up and two very large dinosaurs waiting for everyone to arrive. Yes two dinosaurs! Wow, what a fantastic way to start the day. There were photographs taken, high fives, lots of smiles, school uniforms, hats and safe footwear.

It was wonderful to see so many families at the park to support this very important day. Road Safety Education is necessary for all children, regardless of age. The National Walk Safely to School Day allows us to model to our students, the correct way to safely cross different roads during a busy time of the day. Doing this together as a school community is invaluable.

It was special to share time with our students and families with an educational focus being taught and revised. We appreciate our families joining us for this event. It is important the safe road user behaviours we followed as we walked together to school are not for just one day but every day.

We look forward to spending more time with our families and students at different school events throughout the year.
