Principal's Report

Hello BRPS community,

Welcome to the latest edition of our fortnightly newsletter as the weather begins to heat up.

SunSmart

No Hat, No Play!

With the warm weather well and truly here, this is a reminder that all students are required to wear school hats from September 1st until April (typically the end of Term 1). If you need to buy a new one, please make an order at the uniform shop or visit them during their opening hours of 8.45am-9.30am on Thursdays. Black Rock PS is a SunSmart school and we have a ‘no hat no play’ policy, so please ensure that your child’s hat is packed every day.

Regional & State Athletics

Southern Metro Region - Casey Fields

Congratulations to the 9 students who competed at the 'Regionals' on Monday 21st October. The team put in a magnificent performance with a number of students progressing through to 'States'.

State Athletics Championships

Congratulations to our elite performing students who competed brilliantly at the State Athletics Championships on Thursday.

Please see the sports page for photos and a detailed description of the performances on the day.

Grandparents and Special Friends

On Wednesday, the Foundation students had a visit from their Grandparents and Special Friends. They had a wonderful time serving them scones with jam and cream and completing a shared writing activity!

2020 Enrolments & Class Structure

If your child is currently in Grades Prep – 5 and will not be enroled at BRPS next year please notify the office in writing at your earliest convenience.

Throughout Term 4 until early December, we will be working on our class structures and student combinations for next year. This is a very complex process, influenced by many factors including changes in student numbers and staffing combinations that will cause us to reshape our proposed class structures several times throughout this term. We maintain our commitment to small average class sizes across the school.

Due to this, it is vital that we are made aware of any circumstances that may impact on our enrolment numbers. Please let us know urgently if you intend to enrol a child at our school, if you are aware of people in our community who will be enrolling, or if you intend to transfer to another school. We require this information as soon as possible in order to establish grade structures for the start of the new school year.

Please see the Compass News Feed item sent to all families last week for further information.

World Teachers' Day 2019

Thank you!

Last Friday, 25th October was World Teacher's Day. Over 100 countries celebrate World Teachers’ Day because they recognise the valuable role that teachers play in shaping future generations and ensuring that the opportunities of education are available to all.

Thank you to all of the parents and students who helped to make this day extra special for the teachers of Black Rock Primary School.

President's Cup Golf

Community Information

The President's Cup Golf Tournament will be taking place at our neighboring Royal Melbourne Golf Club from Sunday 8th to Sunday 15th December. There will be significant traffic control measures in place during this time, including a planned closure of Cheltenham Rd, from Reserve Rd. up to the east boundary of the school. We will still have access to the school via Cheltenham Rd from Bluff Rd/Ferguson Street. Detailed traffic management arrangements will be provided to the school in coming Newsletters.

In the meantime, some of our lucky students will have the opportunity to attend a tour and possibly matchplay during the competition. Stay tuned!

Road Safety

Bikes/Scooters

We're now in the midst of our Bike Education program with Year 5 and Year 6 almost complete. Unfortunately I continue to receive reports from concerned community members about students that are neglecting to follow road rules and ride/scoot safely to and from school. A particular concern is students riding straight across (to and from) Links Rd to the staff car park in Arkaringa Crescent.  It is somewhat a blind spot for cars and we have had some near misses. Staff will supervise this intersection, however please take the time to reinforce road safety messages with your children at all times.

Mountain Bike Champs

Caleb S and Kynan P recently represented Black Rock at the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships in Bendigo

On the Saturday they raced in the Mountain Bike XC competition with Caleb finishing 6th and Kynan 7th.

On Sunday Kynan competed in the road cycling race finishing 3rd.

Urban Agriculture

Our Year 4's are well and truly underway with the Urban Agriculture program and garden development. The mini-farmers markets selling produce from the garden on Monday afternoon's have been very popular.

The success of this trial means that we are now planning the expansion of the program. Concept plans will be discussed at the next school council meeting on Monday 11th November.

Have a fantastic fortnight everyone.
