LitSTEM HPE St Simon's Heart Rate Data Activity

Nazareth College recently hosted a LitSTEM Health and Physical Education (HPE) Heart Rate Data Analysis Activity with St Simon the Apostle Primary School. Students participated in Basketball, Soccer and Cardio Sessions and used heart rate monitors and iPads to record heart rates at different times and intensities during the sessions.

Students were able to use the heart rate data to identify acute responses to physical activity and discuss the relationship between heart rate and intensity.  We would like to thank the St Simon the Apostle Primary School Grade 5 students, staff and parents, Year 10 HPE students and Ms Emily Morris and Mr Brendan McAleer for overseeing the sessions.

Textiles Incursion

Last Monday 26 August Nazareth College had 20 students from Grade 6 come to the textiles room. These students were from St Simon the Apostle  Catholic Primary School. They were most enthusiastic about recreating fashion.

The Year 11 VCAL class assisted each Grade 6 student with changing their current item of clothing and turning it into something completely different! There was certainly a buzz in the room and all hands on deck.

The students from St Simon's had great innovative ideas and really thought about sustainability, op shops and recycling clothes.

We are looking at another session or two to complete these ideas.

Wool4School Design Competition

This year Wool4School challenged students to design a garment or outfit that embraces the use of technology to enhance garment performance or function. The participants took on this challenge and applied their talent to the designs that went above and beyond expectations.

An esteemed panel of judges, including leading Australian fashion designer Jonathan Ward and key industry representatives, carefully assessed each and every submission before eventually deciding on the winners and runners-up.

Our students from Nazareth College, for the second year in a row, participated in this competition. They came up with very innovative ideas and designs and about 20 of these were chosen and submitted. This was also an assessment task for all Year 7 Textiles students. Those chosen had met all of the criteria that the judges required.

The Wool4school Design Competition is run each year and open to all students who wish to participate. The prizes are certainly worth the effort, each year level has a different prize.

Years 7, 8 and 9

$500 cash prize, trophy and Emu Ugg boots

Year 10

$1000 cash prize, trophy, outfit made by an Australian designer and featured in an Australian fashion publication.

Year 11

$1000 cash prize, trophy, 5-day internship with Dion Lee, flights and 5 nights’ accommodation for the winner and their guardian, and a Bernina sewing machine.

Year 12

Scholarship to Whitehouse Institute of Design in either Sydney or Melbourne (check out the competition terms and conditions for further information), trophy and a Bernina sewing machine.

I wish to congratulate Emma Sidea from Year 7 for being the Runner Up for the Wool4School Design Competition. This is a competition that students across Australia compete in. There are hundreds of entries and Emma came up with an innovative design. Emma has won a year’s subscription to Frankie magazine. Well done!

Last year we had Alessia Alifano who had just missed out on being a runner up. So we have fingers crossed that in 2020 Nazareth College will have someone go to the next level up.

SIS Athletics

SIS Athletics carnival was a very fun and rewarding day for all the students participating. This year the majority of the team were experiencing the Carnival for the first time, with Year 7 and new students taking part and learning from the older students in the team that had participated on previous occasions. The training sessions and Carnival were very rewarding for both the training aspect and the ability to pass knowledge down to the younger students. As a school we placed 5th, however we had a number of outstanding efforts from a large group of students. It was a great day and a very fun experience.

Athletics Co Captain - Year 11

Attending the SIS Athletics training days was an amazing experience that I will carry out into the world next year. Training and working with students across all year levels was unique and special in its own way. It gave an insight on how hard the teachers were working to make sure we were successful and prepared for the carnival. The SIS Athletics Carnival  was a great day for competing and seeing one of our own team members in each event. Even though we placed 5th, a big congratulations to everybody who competed and did their best.
