Learning Assistant Principal's Report

Academic Excellence Awards
One of our College traditions for Nazareth Day is the presentation of the Academic Excellence awards. The Academic Excellence in Learning Award is given to students in Years 7 – 11 and acknowledges students who are achieving overall grades of an excellent standard. Students are nominated based on College reporting data, and Academic Excellence awards are given to the top ten students of each year level. Laurel subjects and students undertaking VCE acceleration have additional weighting granted to these results when calculating the rankings in order to recognise the higher academic standard for these subjects. The top ten ranked students received a certificate and were sent a letter to acknowledge their achievement and the possibility of receiving the D’Astoli Trophy at the year’s conclusion. The D’Astoli Trophy – named in honour of Nazareth College’s founding Principal – is Nazareth College’s most prestigious academic award, acknowledging the top-ranked academic student in each of Years 7 – 11 at the conclusion of the year.

Registering for an ATAR
Year 12 VCE students have recently been addressed by our Pathways Coordinator Ms Elena Flodstrom about the procedures involved in applying for an ATAR and selecting course preferences for 2020 Tertiary Studies. Applying for an ATAR is essential for entry into the majority of tertiary courses. Receiving an ATAR is not an automatic part of VCE enrolment: students must register and pay online at www.vtac.edu.au by 5.00 pm on Monday 30 September. Parents and students should note that late application is available after this time, but comes at a considerably higher financial cost and some courses will not accept late ATAR applications.
The VTAC Fact sheets offer tips and clearly explain the rules, procedures, policies and processes of applying for an ATAR and for Tertiary courses. They are a helpful resource and free to download from the VTAC website.
Year 7 – 10 Student Progress Interviews, Thursday 19 September
The Mid Semester Reports for Years 7 – 11 students, available on PAM on Tuesday 10 September, provide a snapshot of student work habits for this term. The advent of Continuous Reporting means that parents can already access detailed feedback on their child’s academic progress through the Learning Areas section of PAM.
For valuable, detailed discussion of your child’s progress, Year 7 – 10 teachers will be available by appointment on Thursday 19 September for the Years 7 – 10 Student Progress Interviews. Details for bookings appointments via PAM will be provided via email during the same week as the Mid Semester Reports. While we encourage communication between parents and teachers throughout the semester, this evening provides a vital chance for all parents take advantage of the opportunity to discuss areas for improvement and for ensuring future success by making appointments with all subject teachers in the one place at the one time. This will be particularly important for any parents who may have questions about pathways and promotions concerns for their child for 2020.
For Year 12 VCE students, the final school-based report will be available on PAM in the second week of Term 4.
Please note that Thursday 19 September is the final student day for Term 3 and students will be dismissed at 1.00 pm in order to accommodate the Student Progress interviews.
VCE Unit 3/4 Trial Examinations
Year 11 & 12 students studying VCE Unit 3/4 subjects have received a letter about the Unit 3/4 Trial Examinations and the Trial Examination schedule: this letter is also available on PAM here. Performance on these compulsory exams – held at the College in the second week of the mid-semester break (Monday 30 September to Thursday 3 October) – are the best guide to which areas of skill and content students need to focus on for Term 4 and leading up to the Unit 3/4 examinations. The importance of the final VCE Unit 3 / 4 examinations cannot be overstated, as all school-based results in every subject are moderated (changed) in line with the final VCE examination performances. The Trial Examinations, then, are invaluable in identifying areas that most need attention in studying from now until the final VCE examinations.
