Hospitality Excursion - Sydney - 20-24 June
Twelve Uralla and Walcha Central School Hospitality students went to Sydney between 20-24 June for an opportunity to immerse themselves in various industry and cultural experiences relating to their subject. It is hoped that students will be able to transfer this newly gained knowledge into their responses in their Higher School Certificate exam and be more willing to try new food and implement skills when preparing food and beverages both at school and at home.
Some of the many highlights of the first two days of the excursion included dinner at Manly, visiting Rainier's Deli at Five Dock, enjoying Lebanese sweets and turkish coffee, tasting fresh prawns, fish and calamari at the Sydney Fish Markets, visiting Harry's Cafe de Wheels, trying the amazing Messini Gelato, consuming some of pastry chef Adriano Zumbo's magnificant creations at the Queen Victoria Building and dinner at Chinatown.
Day three's activities included visiting Wat Phrayortkeo Dhammayanaram Lao Buddist Temple at Cabramatta, enjoying a welcoming haka by students from Bonnyrigg High School and touring the extensive Parramatta Leagues Club.
Day four's itiniary included a visit to the International Food and Wine Festival held at Darling Harbour where students were able to view a live cooking demonstration by television chef Miguel Maestrre and view the butchering techniques of chef Collin Fassnidge. Both chefs were entertaining and charismatic. Students also had the chance to taste test many different foods from around Australia including cheeses, ice cream and fudge. Numerous cultural groups mainly from Asia were also demonstrating their cooking techniques and allowing everyone to try their unique flavours.
Everyone enjoyed their Sydney experience immensely and certainly knew that they had arrived back home in Uralla when they alighted from the train into our clean cool mountain air!
School-Based Trainee of the Region
Congratulations to Kane McDonald on his achievement. He was awarded one of the 'School-Based Trainees of the Region' at an awards night in Tamworth last Friday. Kane was nominated for his outstanding efforts at Reece Plumbing, where he has been completing a traineeship as part of his HSC studies. He then participated in an interview with a panel and was deemed worthy of the award. Kane should be very proud of his efforts and gave an impressive speech at the event. Well done Kane!
