Reciprocity: The social aspects of learning utilise the power of social capital. Learning with and from others, knowing when to call upon others and when to work on something yourself, listening and understanding something from someone else’s point of view and watching closely to how someone does something are all powerful ways to accelerate our learning. Reciprocity is the social aspect of learning where learners are ready, willing and able to CONNECT SOCIALLY WITH OTHERS FOR MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL LEARNING. Four critical aspects of Reciprocity are;
Social Intelligence: I know when to learn alone and when to ask others for advice. I know how much and what kinds of interaction it takes to get the job done. I can see that there are some things that cannot be done with others. I know when to call for backup, when to ask others for advice and when to harness the power of the group.
Effective Listening: I show that I am actively listening by my eye contact and my body language. I can recall important parts of what I have heard and can repeat information back to others. I respond appropriately to questions asked about what I have learned.
Empathy: I pay attention to other people’s ideas, feelings and thoughts. I can sense the feelings and thoughts behind people’s actions and words and respond accordingly. I think about what it might feel like to be in another person’s shoes.
Imitation: I notice detail about how others approach/learn things and use this to accelerate my own learning. I can improve my skills and absorb ideas, strategies and thinking patterns by observing other people and trying to do them myself.
A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.
