From the Assistant Principals

Alpine School

We are pleased to advise that Glen Eira College has been allocated places for 4 boys and 2 girls  at the Alpine School Campus in term 2, 2020.  Applications will be sought from current Year 8 students in the second half of Term 4.  Interested students will be asked to complete a written application, participate in a group task and speak with an interview panel.  Successful candidates will be notified prior to the end of the year.

The school offers a fully residential program for one school term with accommodation for up to 45 students in a purpose-built facility.

The unique program at the Alpine School focuses on engaging the students in activities that allow them to explore and learn about the local environment and cultures, both indigenous and non-indigenous. Gaining a sense of belonging in local places through knowledge and experience is a key learning outcome.  Students have spent a significant amount of time learning to survive and thrive in the alpine environment.  Providing these safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences facilitates the practical application of knowledge gained from Thinking and Learning, Peer Skills, Leadership and Teamwork classes.

As part of their time at the Alpine School, all students develop a Community Learning Project (CLP) that will provide an opportunity for all members of our school community to take part. The CLP is the curriculum thread that runs in an adjoining and continuous manner through the program. It provides the purpose for attendance and the motivation for departure.

Rubicon Outdoor Education Centre Partnership

GEC has recently entered into a new 4 year partnership arrangement with Rubicon Outdoor Centre, an outdoor secondary school operated by the Department of Education of Training (DET).

The partnership will enable deeper collaborative partnerships to be established between GEC and Rubicon and ensure that the teaching and learning programs delivered in partnership with Rubicon may be more effectively integrated into student learning for improved outcomes.

The primary focus of this partnership will be to enhance student outcomes through the provision of an Outdoor Learning program integrated into the school curriculum. In addition, the longer term nature of this agreement will provide greater strategic certainty for our school.   Our partnership will commence next year when we send 50 Year 9 students to Rubicon’s Thornton Campus for 5 days in October.
