Magis

Term One

The last few weeks have been packed with Magis activities. We have registered four debating teams, Mock Trials is underway, Year 9 students are preparing for the Scholar’s Cup and a preliminary meeting for the 2018 USA Space Camp was held. Philosophy Club is meeting on Fridays at lunchtime and Astronomy Club has been meeting on Friday evenings.

On Thursday last week I delivered a talk about the Art and Philosophy Program to the AAGGO Conference at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Delegates were very interested, with many asking for the program. I am currently writing the questions for our Magis Carnival to be held on 22 June. I am focussing on philosophical ideas about “nature”.

Students in the Year 8 Magis elective have presented their research proposals and there is a wonderful diversity of topics from researching how plants grow in space to the use of images of prehistoric plants in art making. In keeping with the program theme, students visited the College’s Head Gardener, Peter Worthy, on Monday. He discussed his science with them and students were fascinated to see how he propagates plants and plans the landscaping of the College grounds.
