Leader of Teaching & Learning

Teachers' work behind the scenes has been quite incredible here at school these past weeks. Teachers have quickly armed themselves with new skills and tools and some of us even bravely pressed the screen record button ...you’d be surprised at how many ‘takes’ it takes to make a lesson!  Reimagining our delivery, modifying experiences such as ‘group work’ and replacing the explicit nature of face to face instruction, are challenges we are overcoming in this temporary reality. Students have enjoyed the recordings of their teachers, the Zoom’s,  responding to posts and uploading material. Many are embracing this remote way of learning.

Our learning curve has been steep, but we do it because we love to teach.

On the weekend, I read an article by entertainer David Campbell who, in good humour, detailed the experiences of he and his wife who both, ‘graduated with flying colours from the University of Covid’ to immediately become educators.

Campbell described the challenges faced by the family and the logistics of home learning routines. Importantly, he described the wonder of watching his children, visibly learning. Whether it was the pride they took in working something out,  persisting with challenge, or the way an older child stepped up to lead and help siblings, Campbell underestimated the joy that lies within teachable moments.  As I read this, I couldn’t help but think that somewhere throughout this journey, I hope our McCarthy parents have also been able to watch their own children have that ‘aha’ moment in their learning. I hope they have seen their child learning visibly.

Campbell admits that he has a renewed, healthy respect for teachers, “Now I get it. Why teachers love to teach. It’s a true privilege to guide and mentor a young person. It’s vital. It’s brilliant and it’s hard work.”
