Hospitality Ambassador Program

Year 11 Hospitality students participated in the Hospitality Ambassador Program, which links young, talented chefs to the classroom. Chef Makenzie from The Balmoral in Victoria Park, demonstrated herb crusted lamb cutlets with green beans and mash. He taught students many tricks and techniques including how to create the perfect mash and a ‘rule of thumb’ for perfectly cooked meat. Makenzie also provided an insight into a day in the life of a chef. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about the hospitality industry and cooking, and where then tasked with recreating Makenzie’s dish.

Year 7 Family Picnic

Thank you to the Year 7 parents and students who attended the Family Picnic on Friday, 11 May. It was pleasing to have such a great turnout from the Year 7’s and their families. A good time was had by all.

Year 12 students of Italian of visit the Corsini Exhibition

Year 12 students of Italian visited the much talked about Corsini Exhibition – “A window on Italy - The Corsini Collection: Masterpieces from Florence” currently showing at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Who are the Corsini and why is this exhibition so important? The Corsini were and still are an influential Florentine family and the exhibition contains numerous works of art from their personal collection. Most importantly, this is the first time in 500 years that these artworks have left Italy.

A tour guide talked us through the most significant pieces in the exhibition, including works by Botticelli, Caravaggio, Tintoretto and Ghirlandaio.

We were also fortunate enough to be joined by Prof Silvia Kinder, who added further commentary and answered our questions as we took in the art at our own pace once the tour had concluded.

Some comments from the students:

  • “It was a very educational experience. We learnt about Italian culture and how art changed over the decades.”
  • “It was totally different to any exhibition I had ever seen before. The effort that has gone into organising it and bringing it all to Australia must have been tremendous.”
  • “It was fascinating to learn about a very important Tuscan family; in particular to see their family tree, which could be traced back for hundreds of years.”
  • “It was amazing to learn that over the centuries the family have always recorded their family history. It definitely sparked an interest to study Italian history.”
  • “We learnt a little more about these famous Italian artists.”
  • “It was wonderful to see important works of art which are not accessible to the public. It is a once in a lifetime event, a must see!”
  • “Le cose italiane – Italian things. This is a topic we are currently studying. It was very beneficial to see how 'le cose italiane’ have an influence all over the world and we got to see  real-life examples of Italian things."
  • “We all appreciated the fact that Prof organised the tour and that she and Prof Kinder took the time to meet up with us at the weekend so we could visit it as a class”

The exhibition runs until the 18 June, so if you haven’t been, we strongly urge you to visit, before it heads back to the Corsini Villa in Florence, Italy….for perhaps another 500 years.

Loreto House Day

Loreto staff and students were buoyant coming off a double historic win for the House receiving the Spirit and Over-all Champion award of the Cross Country, to celebrate Loreto Day this year. To commemorate the House day, Loreto staff and students took part in a spirited Newspaper Fashion parade and shared a sausage sizzle lunch. As you can see from the photos below, each year group came up with some interesting creations. Special Guest Loreto Judges from a High End East London boutique Mr Ian Edwards and Mrs Anna Gingell were amazed with the creativity and awarding best design to Year 9s with their Lion King inspired creations.

Many thanks to Amerie Chai, Sophia Defrancesco, Niamh McCleary (Year 7s), Emelia Boog, Will Everett, Jade Hewitson (Year 8s) and Ben Negus (Year 9), Ms Carla Tripi, Ms Mindy Toleman, Mrs Janeen Murphy (staff) and Mrs Mary-Jane Rowbottam (Parent & staff) who kindly gave up their time after school to cook 100 meals for Shopfront who donate to the homeless.

Many thanks to all Loreto staff and students who helped make Loreto Day 2018 a positive and memorable experience.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Hackathon

Last week, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA (CCIWA) alongside the Political and Legal Educators Association of WA (PLEAWA) invited a select group of Year 10 Civics and Citizenship students to attend the 2018 Youth Hackathon. Those chosen to represent John XXIII College included: Luke Bajada, Jack Court, Rachel Jackson, James Langton, Alexandre Maslen and Toby Muenchow.

The Hackathon is a State forum for students to brainstorm ideas in response to issues facing youth today. The event served as a challenging enrichment and extension program for students interested in the field of law and politics. Students were placed into groups with students from other schools, to problem-solve issues and learn how to pitch and present ideas.

The topic for the Hackathon this year was: How can government, industry and business connect better with schools to increase employment outcomes for youth.

Students presented their findings to The Honourable Peter Tinley AM MLA Minister for Youth Affairs, Ross Wortham Chief Executive Officer Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia and Chris Rodwell CEO Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA. All groups were commended on the creative and articulate nature of their ideas – Jack Court and James Langton were awarded second place for Best Pitch.

We congratulate all the students on their impressive work!

Campion Lap-A-Thon 2018

The annual Campion House Lap-A-Thon was held on Thursday 17 May on the College oval. Campion staff and students were encouraged to run or walk as many laps of the 400 metre track as they could in 30 minutes. Students were sponsored by family members and friends with all monies raised donated to LifeLink, a Catholic fundraising and promotional arm which supports and assists the work of social service agencies established by the Archdiocese of Perth. To conclude the Lap-A-Thon, students ‘linked for LifeLink’, forming one big circle to show our support for LifeLink.

All donations will be handed in by Friday 25 May. Campion students raised an impressive $2800 in 2017, we hope to outdo ourselves this year! Thank you to all the students, staff and families who have generously contributed so far.
