School Captain’s Forum

The School Captains were invited by Gerard Filipe, the Youth Mayor of Frankston, to join Frankston’s first School Captain’s Forum on Wednesday the 20th of May. Sara Riippa and Luke Janson attended among the captains of other surrounding schools which included Mt Erin Secondary, Frankston High, John Paul College and Patterson River Secondary; each with two to four school captain representatives and the Youth Mayor.

We gathered in the Acacia Chamber of the Civic Centre to discuss the issues we thought were important among youth within our schools as well as the Frankston Peninsula. A main concern brought up was the lack of student’s motivation towards school and their future aspirations. The idea of a careers expo was brainstormed by Luke and the possibility to implement it to the Frankston youth public was discussed. The idea was to provide the opportunity for people to learn more about their desired fields in order to heighten their interest towards school subjects and realise the importance of their education. Gerard was enthused and said he would bring up this idea with the Frankston Council at the next meeting. Furthermore, we conversed about the different ways the Student Leadership/Representative Councils operate at each school. It was interesting to hear about Frankston High’s large student led committee with various subgroups and over 70 representatives. On the other hand, Mt Erin Secondary had not heard of the idea of a student council and were able to gain insight into a possible initiative for their school. McClelland’s SRC are currently organising a Teach the Teacher conference which we have chosen to focus on improving student-teacher relationships to further increase student’s effort and motivation in class. We were able to learn from the leaders of Frankston High their success with the program as they had run it last year and they provided us with insight which we were able to take back to our SRC.

The first School Captain’s Conference was an overall success and it was a great experience to be able to share ideas with other schools with the intention of helping each other to create a better environment for all students. We were also able to contribute to the Frankston community and bring up issues of concern surrounding youth engagement and safety within our society.

We will be meeting again on Wednesday the 27th of June for the second conference and hope to gather once a month with the Youth Mayor and continue these discussions.

McClelland College Business Management Students Engaging With Industry At Yakult

On the 18th of May the Year 12 Business Management classes ventured out to the Yakult Factory in Dandenong for their Operations Management Excursion. The students were taken through entire factory was given a great education on the many procedures, controls, and initiatives that allow Yakult to be a competitive business in the production of probiotic products. The students were able to see each facet of production and this was an initiative to provide them with real-world case studies for their assessments and exams discussions around Operations Management.

On return to the college the students assembled in the Food Studies facilities where they worked in small teams to create their own product lines and small businesses distributing children's party foods as a part of the preparation for their Operations Management SAC. The students were able to bring the 21st Century to feel to the business activities when they created a social media presence which highlighted the importance of getting your product out to the world. If you would like to check them out please hit up Instagram and check the #hkyjtbm2018 you will not be disappointed.

I would like to thank all the students for getting involved in the practical aspects of Business Management in VCE and I would also thank all staff that contributed to the success of the day across the college.

Tertiary Information Seminar (TIS)

On the 22nd of June, the year 12 VCE students attended an excursion at Monash University Peninsula Campus along with students from Mt Erin, Frankston High and Mt Eliza. The excursion involved finding our own way to Monash to prepare students for the independence of university life. To begin with, we attended a lecture with information about the university application process.

After that, we went to the university’s cafeteria where there were some stalls from other Victorian universities like RMIT, Chisolm, La Trobe and more. The excursion was quite successful and provided students with an insightful opportunity to research potential tertiary education options and career paths.
