Year 11 Biology Field Trip

The year 11 Biology class went on a field trip to Mushroom Reef in Flinders to explore the rocky shore environment as part of their unit 1 outcome 2 research project.  The day started with a bus trip down to Flinders pier and a visit to the town while waiting for the tide to go out. On the drive down the rain loomed ominously but we were lucky to avoid a drenching the duration of the excursion. We climbed down to mushroom reef and went rock pooling, exploring the natural ecosystem and seeing a variety of coastal creatures. The students were investigating as to whether they would find more life closer to the ocean. Working in teams the student sampled life forms in different areas and were able to identify a range of different species. The students had the opportunity to investigate a real ecosystem and see an example of what they have been learning about in natural habitat. This excursion provided a unique insight into the natural world. The year 11s worked well during this excursion which provided them with a detailed understanding of sampling techniques. Good work team!!

Year 11 Business Management Visit To Collingwood Children's Farm

Year 11 Business Management students visited two social enterprises in the city last month as part of a unit of study which encompasses corporate social responsibility. Students visited the inner city suburbs of Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond as part of this activity. We got to meet the animals at the Collingwood Children’s Farm, and have lunch at Lentil As Anything. Both of these organisations are run as not for profit entities and aim to serve the local and broader communities. We thank them for their support of McClelland College by welcoming us into their establishments. It was a great learning experience and a fun time was had by all.

Women in Leadership

'The women in leadership program provides young women from schools with the essential leadership skills they need to engage in a successful, meaningful career. Female executive role models mentor the students in small groups to develop their skills and build their confidence, encouraging them to aspire to senior roles in business and the community. Over three sessions at CGU Australia , myself and seven other year eleven girls as well as Lalor secondary college participated in numerous workshops and activities with mentors and had the opportunity to ask leaders of the workplace many questions. I think I can speak for all the girls when I say say the commute was worth  the trip. We have gained so many new skills and learned so much about leadership. We know now how to deal with difficult situations , how to strengthen your weaknesses, how to lead from the front and the back and we even learnt how to make a LinkedIn account. This experience has given us important skills for the future and a greater understanding of the workplace, and we made new friends on the way. Thank you to Mrs Andrews for taking us to the city every week and to Mr Holt for bussing us back and forth from the station.'

Fit 2 Drive

On the 16th of May, Year 11 were involved with the Fit2Drive program. The program raises awareness for young adults preparing to drive and be driven around by their peers. The program is a strong reminder of the importance of preparing our students for life in motor vehicles with friends and family and hones in why we need to ensure our safety at all times. The program takes all participants through a range of scenarios that they could be presented with on a regular basis and teaches the tools of how students can manage their way through these situations. The presenters were fantastic and worked really hard to connect and share the valuable messages and tips for making it through the vulnerable teens and early adulthood where we are not always aware of the risks and or solutions to make sure that we are all safe of the roads. As always our students were very engaged and worked well with the Fit2Drive Team to get the most out of the sessions.
