Preparing for Examinations: A Positive Mindset

Preparation for music performances, including examinations, begins well in advance.  As previously discussed, the process of learning to control a musical instrument, and then a performance is a long and exciting road.  The student guided by the teacher and supported by the parents (and the village), is introduced to new repertoire and learning activities that build a skill set. In turn the developing skill set opens the door to more challenging repertoire.  The performance, and the performance for assessment against a standard, in this case an internationally recognised standard in the Australian Music Examination Board, should be approached with a positive mind set.

The student who is accountable for their learning and has applied themselves in an authentic manner should be ready to enjoy the experience of a performance and elevate their music to higher artistic expression.  The music and the student musician working as one to communicate emotion and ignite someone’s spirit can change the world, because their music can change a person.

Over the next few weeks, the preparation that students, teachers, and the family (and the village) have put in will come to fruition, including during performances for AMEB examinations.  Some students will submit video repertoire and others will sit face to face examinations here in the Kantor Centre.  Having prepared authentically and being accountable for their commitment, students are encouraged to enjoy these performances.

Examiners, and audiences generally, are delighted to hear what you have been working on.  Whilst it is also their job to assess your performance against a standard, they are on your side and, as music educators, they are keen to see more students becoming great musicians. They want you to do well.  The performance that presents a musician in control of their instrument, engaged with their music and enjoying their performance is the one that any audience will want to be a part of.
