Teaching and Learning

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

Now is the time to prepare! As Week 6 draws to a close, students in years 7-11 are starting to talk about end of year exams and revision. For some of our students this will be their first examination period, so the idea of sitting exams can be quite daunting. But there are a range of practical and mental strategies that each student can put in place to ensure they are exam fit and ready. Your mindset is important as you begin to revise and prepare for your exams, as is your revision of course materials. Good sleep practices, a healthy diet, exercise and some stress reduction techniques like deep breathing, visualisation and positive self-talk can all assist students.

The key to approaching the end of year examinations is preparation. It is knowing what information will be examined and designing an approach that allows for regular revision and recall of learning.

Here is a checklist of a few things you can do at home to support your son or daughter as they begin revision.

-Set aside a clear and tidy space at home to study

- Print out a planner for the next four weeks of the term and mark in exam dates and assessments.

- Use the planner to note what days you will do each subject/unit/exercise. For example: Monday 23rd November Science Unit 3: Electricity questions 1-10

- Purchase a revision booklet. Many students like to use books that have several sections in them so that all the exam revision can be completed in one book.

-Collate all class notes, past tests, and assessments for each subject

- Review the Class OneNote for additional information

- Work through the subject revision provided by the teacher. This might mean creating summary notes, creating flashcards, making mind map posters, doing problems and exercises, or completing past exam papers.

-Older students often benefit from forming study groups. Students can meet in the library at lunchtime, after school in person or online to review work together.

For additional support students should seek specific advice from their classroom teacher. Many of our students benefit from attending academic assistance in the library afterschool – Monday- Thursday from 3.45-5.30 pm. If you would like more advice about how to help your child, please make contact with your child’s mentor.

The exam timetable will be available in Week 7.
