Holograms and Science

Mr Meyer has a long and strong history with Cornerstone, and steps into the role of Head of Secondary in 2021. He is inspirational in his ability to communicate about science with students at the College.

Today he was working with Mr Meyerink's Year 5s and showed them some amazing optical illusions that were nothing short of fascinating; from how to make your own hologram, to how our eyes can be tricked with colour wheels and moving lasers. It was part of their studies on light, and Mr Meyerink said it was really cool seeing the kids literally going 'Wow' and matching these experiences to their new knowledge.

We have fantastic teachers at our school and we want to thank and celebrate Mr Meyer for giving up his time and giving the kids another 'taste' of what is to come in high school.

The students had an amazing time with him - thanks, Mr Meyer!

Shadow Puppets

This is excitingly different!

Mr van der Tang’s Year7 Drama class have been busy with a shadow puppet project. Scripts are written and the puppets are a work in progress. The aim is to record the soundtrack allowing students to focus on manipulating the puppets for their final performances. Stories to be presented include a selection of traditional fairytales.

How great are these!

Ahoy me Counters!

We recently had a very strange visitor in the Year 1 classroom. A pirate came in with a treasure chest and a note. Unfortunately, he could not read not count and desperately needed the help of our Year One students.

But were they clever enough to count a chest full of coins for our pirate and work out how much money it was? They sure were. They sorted the money according to the type of coins, counted the coins, worked out the value of their coins. They had to use many of the skills and strategies they had learnt throughout the year. Counting, skip-counting, halving, place value and problem solving and much more. Very well done, Year Ones!

Last Friday our pirate came back and was very impressed by these youngsters who could read and count so well. As a reward he shared some of his (edible) gold with them. Yum!

Asia Day Expo

The Year 6s hosted their Asia Day Expo recently, with students from across the Primary school dropping by to hear all about the food, culture, clothing and interesting facts about a range of countries.

So much effort was made - and we thank the students (and their parents) for the hard work they have done.

Great work, team!

Student Council 2021

Last Monday, we had our House Captain nominations for our 2021. There was much excitement and the Year 5s prepared and delivered top quality speeches. The Year 6s and current captains also shared some positives and advice for our future leaders. The new captains will be announced next Friday the 4th of December and receive their badges on our end of year Awards Night. Well done, Year 5!

Maths in the sunshine

Bright sunshine and blue skies made the perfect classroom for the Year 6s last week, to explore mathematical concepts about volume and weight, with water.

The weather could not have been more perfectly accommodating of a session on the oval.

Year 10 Service Camp

Each year, our Year 10 students finish the year with a Service Camp.  The intent is to provide practical support to non-for-profit organisations. Here's a report from Mrs Langenhoven.

‘Our year 10 service camp is off to a wonderful start! We started the day at 7.30am with devotions on the beach. Then after breakfast we put in a solid morning's work. The students put up possum homes, oiled a deck, oiled benches, laid turf, gardened, mulched, ripped down an old chook cage and cleaned. It was a busy start to camp but our Year Ten students have already accomplished so much!’

Mrs Langenhoven then continued:

‘After lunch we had a visit from a lovely parent and their boat, thank you Dr. Riches!! The students had an AMAZING afternoon knee boarding, biscuiting and swimming. They then set to work digging their 'fox holes' for this evening's game. Everyone was happy but exhausted and went to bed by 10.30pm. A very civil hour for teenagers on camp!’

Here's a short video taken by Mr Meyer - which highlights that we not only have a wonderful College that intentionally blesses our community, but that we also are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world!

Service Camp Report from Day 2 and 3.

'Gardening, demolition, cleaning, painting, organising, vacuuming, scrubbing and cooking. The students are exhausted but have worked incredibly hard and Mrs Langenhoven and Mr Arthur are so proud! The Year 10s have outdone themselves.

There has still been plenty of time for swimming, sport, games and eating!

Thank you parents for entrusting your teenagers to us. They have blessed their community this week and represented themselves and the College in such a positive way.'

Thanks also to our amazing team of teachers who were part of making this happen. Special thanks to Mr Arthur for overseeing the event, and for Mrs Langenhoven and Miss Blennerhassett for their part in providing crucial support.

'My Place'

Mr Bernabe has shared some images of his students, which showed the results of their “My Place” book study presentation.

'The 5/6 class built a settlers’ village and dressed up as characters from the book. Cheers to the students for pulling it all off. You are all so amazing!'

Great work, everyone!

Illustrator Artwork

Year 7 Design is showing some fantastic results - and Mr Tink has these two examples to show us of student work utilising Adobe Illustrator. Here's his explanation.

'The students were asked to choose a landscape from a supplied group and replicate the scene using the pen tool, multiple layers and gradients. Charlotte Blennerhassett replicated a landscape scene from Slovenia. Charlotte worked quite independently on this task but was open to suggestions and advice in refining her work. The original image can be found at https://pixabay.com/photos/bled-slovenia-lake-island-sunrise-2608425/'

'The students were asked to shoot photographs and design an advertisement promoting one of several fictitious companies. Abi Reid developed this advert combining photographs she took at home with a logo and graphics she developed in class. Abi demonstrated patience and a willingness to consider the advice of her teacher.'

Sensational work, ladies.

Welcome to Cornerstone!

Last Wednesday, it was Welcome Day at Cornerstone Busselton!

To our delight, students who will be commencing at Cornerstone in 2021 have joined current students for a day of transition into their classes for next year. Of particular note are the students who will be commencing Secondary school next year. Mrs Langenhoven made her way around to the various options the students were experiencing. From cooking to woodwork - there was a little bit of everything happening.

Welcome to all our new students. We are so glad you are here.

Market Day

The Annual Market Day was a hit - and because of the hard work of students, staff (and parents), significant fundraising occurred for some of the world's poorest.  We are delighted to announce that $2427.60 was raised.

Well done everyone on utilising your creative business ideas for the benefit of others.  So lovely to see.
