The Triad

The classic parent-teacher-student triad has never been more depended upon. Our world today has parents, teachers and students immersed deeply in information, presenting both an array of possibilities and a never-ending queue of decisions. The classic triad wades through all this noise and haste to discover and enable that which truly matters to each individual student. The bonding agent of the classic triad comprises patience, kindness and trust.

Although the educational setting, much like many other settings, is becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated, the relational foundations of education will remain. Teachers and parents will always need a good dose of patience with supporting young people to grow in independence. Teachers and parents will always share a kind word of congratulation or encouragement as young people build self-confidence. Teachers and parents will always (with a touch of hesitation at times!) provide opportunities for young people to be trusted. Whilst the adults in this relational triad get about their business, we mustn’t lose sight of the central figures in our triad, our students.

We can often underestimate how young people are patient, kind and trusting of us big kids. They patiently ride out our moments of stress. They kindly offer to assist us in times of struggle. They trust us when they are unsure and need direction. It’s these mutual human exchanges which strengthen the bonds within the parent-teacher-student triad.

As we wade through the noise, haste, challenges and triumphs of the first term of the year, we have the opportunity to collectively grow in awareness with how the 1700 triads of the College are bound together. Assessment is pouring in. Red ink is being splashed on exam papers as they are marked. Achievement standards are at the ready to be assigned. Parent-teacher interview times are ready to be filled. The triad is in full swing. Holding these important school practices together is patience, kindness and trust. The parent-teacher-student triad is best when there is an even sharing of these and an even appreciation of the other.

May each of us strive to do our best with fostering patience, kindness and trust in our roles with educating and enabling our young men of Marist.
