News from 4 / 5

Inquiry, Reading, and Writing- all rolled into one!

Over this week and next, all of the grades 3, 4 and 5's are researching a European or Australian First Peoples Artifact. They are collecting facts about their chosen artifact and then are writing a journal entry from the perspective of a European or First Nations Person and how they use this artifact in their daily lives.

We have all been researching information and looking at images relating to this in our reading and writing lessons last week. At present, most students have chosen an artifact, have drawn it, and have researched facts about what it was used for and how it was used in the daily lives of people in the 1700s.  Lots of students have begun their journal entries as well.  The students are very engaged and excited and have written some wonderful drafts. Next week's task is to edit and publish a final piece that they can be proud of to share with others. We aim to present the drawing, research and journal entries to other classes next week when students have finished. Next term we endeavor to show these artifacts, research pieces, and journal entries to all of you too.

Here are a few samples of what has been written so far:

Mathematics

Over the last few weeks, the class has been investigating using timetables and telling the time. This week we explored the relationship between addition and subtraction and used these opposite operations to check our calculations. We have also started worded problems and have explored the different steps it takes to solve real-life problems. Everyone has worked well and engaged in these units of work.
