Learning about literacy…
In the Preschool we start talking about the letters in the children’s names and some familiar words. Our main focus in Preschool is developing enjoyment in books. We do this by engaging the children in the story and helping them to identify with the characters. Recently in Bilima Group the children connected with Andy who was on his way to Preschool. We read our new book over two days and then we read the same book as an ebook to introduce technological literacy. The Gurawara Group were able to connect with the concept of friends being the same and different while reading Stellaluna. As this story is a longer book we used a bookmark to keep our place so that we could pick up where we left off the next day. In Preschool we immerse the children in literacy so that they are motivated to work out what letters, words and symbols mean. This is done by allowing them to have a go as best they can with simple tasks like writing in old blank diaries, playing postie or making a treasure map to start a turn taking game of treasure hunts. We link mark making to local Dharawal symbols through the use of Coomaditchie symbols and finding opportunities to refer back to this resource when outside in the sandpit or inside during grouptime or in writing corner. Also visiting the library and having our Year 6 buddies visit on Friday supports the children to start enjoying stories as well as starting to learn about letters, words and books. The tip sheets that can be found at the link below include some great ideas for all families to support young children with literacy development.
