 Mrs Alice Wigny

Hello from Mrs Wigny,

It has been another busy fortnight, with Life Education, School Photos, Gymnastics, Student Leader Induction, and our PLP Breakfast. I am so very proud of the way our students have conducted themselves and settled into the routines of school. For many, this is the first year of their education that has not been significantly impacted by Covid. I am looking forward to many wonderful events between now and the end of term for our students and families!

SRC INDUCTION

Last Wednesday our new Student Representative Council (SRC) were announced and inducted to our school. I would like to congratulate each of our students who will now represent their class at their meetings. These students form a voice that provides us with valuable feedback on how our school is going and what we can do to better support our students. I look forward to working with our SRC and school leaders.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MATHEMATICS

On Tuesday, March 14 students P-6 participated in the International Day of Mathematics. Each class created a poster titled Mathematics is for Everyone with every child’s face on the poster. Teachers discussed with students how important Maths is in our everyday lives and that everyone can succeed at Maths. Students were read books with a focus on Mathematics and the canteen had a "Pi" Meal Deal. This day was enjoyed by all our teachers and students. I would like to thank Miss Connor and the Maths Crew for organising the day.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN for students in Years 3 and Years 5 commenced yesterday and will continue until Monday, 27 March 2023. NAPLAN tests students’ skills in reading, writing, language conventions and maths. NAPLAN is being conducted in the Digital Technology Lab and also the library. I would like to thank Mr McGee and Miss Cotterill for all their organisation, time and efforts in preparing your Years 3 and Y 5 students to undertake these tests. We wish our students all the best.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS – Save the Date!

Parent/teacher interviews for classes in Years K-6 will be held on Monday, 27 March commencing at 3.10pm in student classrooms. At this time, parents and teachers will be able to speak about the progress of students, their strengths, areas to be developed and any possible concerns. This is also a good opportunity to find out how well your child has settled into the new school year.

Parent/teacher interviews can be booked online, and information about how to book parent/teacher interviews was sent home last week. Each interview will be 10 minutes in duration. This will allow as many parents as possible to have a suitable time. If parents cannot make the allotted time, another time will need to be discussed and arranged with your child’s teacher.

Booking details have been distributed to families via School Enews.

Preschool interviews will be conducted in Term 2. Stay tuned for an information sheet and booking code.

THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS

Oak Flats Public School is committed to providing a technology-rich environment for our students. Our school community considers the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is fundamental in assisting teaching and learning in all areas of the school curriculum. The school uses third-party providers offering web-based educational resources and cloud-based storage to support our administrative functions and enhance student learning outcomes. The department has a service agreement with some providers it has assessed as meeting privacy and security standards required of the department. The school offers students access to a number of services in addition to these. In most instances, students are required to register before accessing an online service. Registration involves either a staff member or student entering identifying information such as name, grade, and email address onto the provider’s platform. This and any other data entered in the course of accessing the application may be stored on servers located in Australia or offshore in a country not subject to NSW privacy laws. Your consent is required for your child’s information to be provided to these third-party providers. We ask that you please return these notes promptly so that teachers can get started where appropriate.

TEACHERS CONTACTING PARENTS/CARERS

Sometimes your child’s teacher wants to contact you to discuss aspects of learning. More often than not, our teachers will call from a No Caller ID. If they try and call and you do not answer, they will leave a voice message (if that option is available). Many times, this may occur when the teacher has a break from teaching. If you have received a call from a No Caller ID, please contact the school, as it may be one of us, trying to make contact!

ATTENDANCE

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think. When your child misses one day a week over a year, that’s 40 days of school, 8 weeks of lessons and 2.5 years over their school life lost. As your child’s education has already been interrupted through periods of learning from home due to COVID-19 over the last 2 and a half years, now is the time to prioritise face-to-face learning and making the most of every school day. If you are planning on a family holiday or extended leave from school for more than 3 days, the Department of Education requires an Application for Extended Leave to be completed. This can be collected from the front office.

Have a great fortnight!

Warm Regards,

Alice Wigny
