Visual Arts

The Prep students have been creating their first Art Project - an 'Under the Sea' artwork. In Art, a project is an activity that goes for more than one week. The Prep's began their project by making beautiful Rainbow Fish! They cut their fish out and then decorated it with lots of beautiful, coloured scales! There were even some special shiny scales. The next part of the project is to create under the sea backgrounds. We brainstormed ideas of what we find under the sea. The Preps came up with fantastic ideas like sharks, stingrays, mermaids and more. They have been working so hard and their 'Under the Sea' artworks are coming along beautifully! Great job Preps!

Digital Technologies

The Year 1 and 2 students have been exploring the topic of data over the last few weeks. We have learnt about the role of data in computers and the ways we reguarly interact with data online, such as in the weather apps.

This week we have practiced collecting data by asking our peers, "What is your favourite...?" The Year 1 and 2's were able to choose a topic they were interested in with many deciding on food, sports and games. A highlight was the classroom hum as students confidently asked their questions and shared responses with each other. Building on recent learning in Maths, students used tally marks to note down their peers responses. Finally, we used computational thinking skills to analyse the information and answer questions about trends.

Music

In the Year 3 and 4 Music program we have been learning how to compose music to represent moods. We have used movie and video game soundtracks to support our learning, as music is often used to enhance an emotion in a movie or video game.

Students have learnt about how major and minor keys work and how this has a great impact on the mood of the music. They have learnt how to use specific composition techniques to create different outcomes in a piece of music. These include melodic sequences, rhythmic repetition, chord progressions, ostinatos and drum patterns.

Using an online music program, students have begun composing a piece of music for a video game. They had four contrasting games to pick from. The composition will feature music written for four instruments and three sections.

Physical Education

Members from the Melbourne Tigers joined the Year 5 and 6 students this week to coach basketball. They provided each student the opportunity to develop their skills of coordination, agility  and team work with the correct form of passing, dribbling and shooting. They taught us about the acronym B.E.E.F. (Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow through) to help us with our technique. Each class participated in drills, games and finished each lesson by challenging one another to a ‘miss’ or ‘make’ shot competition. The Year 5/6 students learnt a lot and really appreciated the Melbourne Tigers coaches!
