Junior School News

Prep 1 & 2

Dear Families,

It's hard to believe Term One has almost come to an end! We have had the most fabulous beginning to 2023.

Easter Bonnet Parade

Next Thursday Prep's, One's and Two's will be having our Easter Bonnet Parade at 12noon on the oval. Parents are welcome to come along! Children can bring in their bonnets from Tuesday if they are ready to go.

Orthographic Mapping - how do we support this in the Junior School?

Orthographic mapping is the process that successful readers use to become fluent. It involves the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spelling, pronunciation, and meanings of specific words in memory. In the Junior classes we facilitate the development of this skill by 'mapping out' irregular words, such as 'the', 'what' and 'one'. Students then have the opportunity to apply this skill during our daily fluency practice.

Athletics Day

What a day we had for our Athletics carnival! We could not have been luckier with the weather and team spirits were at a high. Congratulations to Mr Brown on organising this spectacular day.

Prep News

Our Prep's  have been kicking goals during our morning literacy blocks. We have been learning about 'closed syllable' words; where the vowel is trapped and can't shout out its name, like in the words 'cat', 'pit', 'dog' and 'men'.

A range of 2D shapes have been explored in Maths; looking closely at squares, triangles, rectangles and circles. We learned to identify and describe these shapes by number of sides and vertices. We also looked for these shapes around the school, yard and classroom.

Year One

In Maths we are learning number bonds within the range of ten and have been modelling our understanding on tens frames and reknreks. During our location unit we designed our own maps using our knowledge of location. We had so much fun coding our Bee - Bots to follow directions and visit different destinations on our maps.

In TWR our Year One's are looking at expanding sentences using 'who', 'when' and 'where'. As a class we take 'kernel sentences' and turn them into super sentences. Look at our great work!

Year Two

In TWR we have been learning to expand a sentence using juicy adjectives, verbs and adverbs. We analyse pictures before utilising skills taught to compose a sentence.

In Maths we have been exploring  the relationship between addition and subtraction. We use our knowledge of place value to break down two digit numbers into tens and ones. We have also been learning about 2D shapes, 3D objects and telling time to quarter to/past the hour.
