Community Engagement at Mackellar PS

We are off and running at Mackellar P.S with the inclusion of a great activity for students participating in Interschool sports.  Mackellar is introducing ‘Rookie Rollers’, a lawn bowls sport.

We have contacted Bowls Australia and the Deer Park Bowling club to assist with the training and game days planned for the students.  We have 22 students signed up to participate in this exciting sport and it is hoped that other schools in the district will follow us and form a team.

The team is called Rookie Rollers and it is a modified version of lawn bowls. Information can be found at https://www.bowls.com.au/rookie-rollers/  At its core, Rookie Rollers is designed to enable school children to participate in an engaging format, which is both fun and inclusive.

Importantly for us, it can be played on a range of surfaces including greens, carpets, concrete, wooden floors and just about anything else that is flat, eliminating the restrictions of requiring a bowling green.  It provides an opportunity for every child to play and compete, and it also fits in and aligns with the Australia’s Government’s Sporting Schools initiative and supports the Victorian curriculum.

The students’ sessions at the Deer Park Bowling Club will make for a great community connection, we anticipate that there will be 4 or more club members to assist our staff and help the students learn the skills of lawn bowls. The club will assist us in providing a championship finals towards the end of term 2.

Our upcoming events on the calendar are the Parent, Meet and Greet nights on March 7 and 9 and we all look forward to meeting you again in person.

Then it is International Women’s Day on March 8th. The first curriculum day for the year is on March 10 and has been advertised in XUNO.
