What's Happening in Grade  2?

The Grade 2 students have settled into the new school year extremely well and have enjoyed reconnecting with peers within their classrooms. We have been working on reinforcing our school values in order to establish routines and expectations and have been implementing the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support lessons based on the matrix.

In English, we have been reading about and writing procedural texts. Students have been learning about the purpose, structure and language features of procedures. They have also been exploring imperative verbs and applying them within their writing. Students were also provided with opportunities to practise procedures such as blowing bubbles, making healthy sandwiches and designing party hats. Students have demonstrated an improvement in their understanding of procedures as the term has progressed and will continue to apply their knowledge independently.

In Numeracy, students have been learning about Place Value of two and three digit numbers. They have participated in activities and games using concrete materials, in both groups and independently, to explore different ways that numbers can be represented. They have also been practising their skip counting skills from various starting points and ordering numbers from smallest to largest.

Students have also been learning about Data Representation and Interpretation. As a class, we created a birthday graph to begin our unit and made observations about which month had the most or least number of birthdays. Students have learnt about asking the ‘right’ type of questions to collect data. They used tally marks and recorded their results in a graph. They subsequently interpreted the information they observed and created statements. Students concluded the unit by independently collecting and presenting data on the colours of the cars in the staff car park.
