Make A Difference Day

Year 10 students Mieke van Wel and Lily Spencer-Tighe
Year 10 students Mieke van Wel and Lily Spencer-Tighe

5th of April 2019

Last term, Year 10 students Mieke van Wel and Lily Spencer-Tighe attended a day of workshops, learning and networking at The Parliament of NSW. Together with young leaders from around NSW we discussed issues that young people face in our society, referendums, plebiscites and changes to the constitution.

Issues such as action for climate change, lowering the voting age and social inequalities were all discussed throughout Make a Difference Day. We also were fortunate to hear Dr Lilon Bandler, an Indigenous professor and doctor specialising in rural medical services, speak about what we can do to make changes as young leaders in our communities. Overall, it was an interesting day that helped us to explore strategies to initiate change in our communities.

SEA NEWS

The SEA has decided to support the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs organisation. The charity wishes to donate a wheelchair for disabled adults and children in South Africa who are less fortunate and cannot afford a wheelchair. Collecting bread tags, even broken ones, can make a major difference to our environment.

Bread tags are made of High Impact Polystyrene and have good recycling value.

The bread tags are sent to a plastic factory in Zimbabwe which is then recycled into seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers, and other items. The amount raised from selling these recycled items are used to fund wheelchairs.  2-3 wheelchairs are successfully donated to adults and children every month.

We need to collect 200 kg of bread tags to bring in enough money to buy one wheelchair, so please donate to the box outside the TAS staffroom if you can.

TheatreSports

Congratulations to our wonderful Year Nine TheatreSports team that gained a very commendable third placement on Monday 14th May in the TheatreSports Challenge Cup. Our team of Annissa Chedra, Mae Mitsak, Zoe Trenbath and Ruby Wilkinson although novice to the competition, quickly gained knowledge and experience from the workshop prior to the competition.  When things were underway it was difficult to distinguish their skills and contribution from their more experienced Year ten competitors.   In the performance and workshop they were remarkable and courageous.  One highlight was their staging of dancing trees as the trees proclaimed their love for the garden or was it the gardener?  The team did a great job in representing Canterbury Girls High School and hopefully they will continue their exploration of this fun and exciting improvisation based activity through attending CGHS’s own Theatresports regular workshop on Tuesday from 2.30pm – 3.45pm in the Cantabrian Hall – All are welcome.

Salvation Army - Red Shield Appeal

At assembly, SRC students Arame Nicolls and Chaltu Strachan introduced the request for volunteers for the annual Red Shield Appeal. Our girls have always been very generous with donating their time for this cause. All registration and collecting is organised through the Salvation Army and therefore is not coordinated by the SRC.

The collection will be Sunday 26 May, 9am, for about 2 - 3 hours. All collection materials, including Identification will be provided.

Click this link for the recruitment flyer, which includes the web address for signing up as a collector - it is important if you want to collect near the school to indicate that you will collect in the Canterbury/Campsie Zone, there should also be a place to indicate that you are from Canterbury Girls High School, which is set up as a group. You will receive a return email with information on where to meet, etc - the plan this year is to have the students collect in the streets neighbouring the School. We will have responsible adults (with relevant WWCC clearance and training) meet you, and remain in the area throughout the collection. The aim is that none will be transported in private vehicles, but the the collection will be on foot from the school area.

All collectors will receive an Appreciation Certificate, and a voucher from McDonald's, who are one of our Appeal sponsors. Your help will contribute towards your school recognition badge and will make a huge difference to the lives of others.

Day of Wellbeing- Year 11 and 12

Thursday 21st March, Term 1.

The Day of Wellbeing is specifically designed to set senior students up in the right direction for the year ahead. Each session addresses specific needs identified by past and present students to help them successfully navigate senior schooling life.

Year 11 participated in:

  • Study skills workshop to revise and enhance study technique for improved understanding in their chosen subjects.
  • Crime prevention/ Legal Rights Workshop ran by Legal Aid NSW. This session provided specialised legal education for young people and teachers that promote a better understanding of the criminal law and how it can affect them. Specialist solicitors from the Children’s Legal Service help young people to know their rights, understand their responsibilities and know where to go if they need help.
  • Time management by Elevate Education. This session is designed to help students; organise and balance their time, balance work and lifestyle, produce high quality work, help utilise study groups and learn techniques to overcome procrastination.

Year 12 had sessions on:

  • Traffic Law and Young People Workshop ran by Legal Aid NSW. This session provided specialised road education for young people and teachers that promote a better understanding of the traffic law and how it can affect them.
  • Study skills workshop to revise and enhance study technique for improved understanding in their chosen subjects.
  • Ace the exams by Elevate Education. A seminar designed to reinforce exam preparation techniques, learn discrete study skills and developing an exam preparation cycle spanning a number of weeks either end of an exam.

Both year groups finished the day by watching a play by Brainstorm Productions called “Wired”. This educational theatre addressed student mental health and emotional wellbeing, including the physiology, causes and effects of stress, anxiety and depression. Two adolescents with extremes of are spiralling out of control in different directions - stress and the other into depression. The audience had the opportunity to see the characters play out an alternative path towards greater resilience and mental wellbeing. Wired was an engaging play to enhance mental health awareness in schools.

Students expressed that the information learnt was valuable to them and they felt more confident for the year ahead.
