From the Principal

Benvenuto - Welcome
What an exciting week it has been at St Anne’s College, with the beginning of our stage 2
build on Tuesday. Construction work has begun with a flurry and there is much anticipation
to see how the build unfolds. The children are very curious and asking lots of questions.
Included in this edition of il giornale is a suite of information regarding the importance of
attendance at school. The ‘Attendance Matters’ material offers some good hints and tips for
improving and monitoring attendance, as well as some information about what to do if your
child is absent from school. Regular school attendance has been linked to better health
outcomes, better employment outcomes and higher income across their lives.
On Wednesday, February 26, we saw the very best in our children as they attended and participated in
the Ash Wednesday Mass at Christ the King Church. The children were respectful and were
being their best. Fr Peter led a lovely celebration of a very special time in our church year.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a season of fasting and prayer.
The children were marked with ashes in the shape of a cross on their forehead as a visible
symbol of penance. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the
previous year's Palm Sunday. Lent is a time of reflection, prayer and action. Project
Compassion features heavily in our work with the children around this time of year – to find
out more about Project Compassion and the stories featured for 2020, you can go to this
website https://lent.caritas.org.au/#
This week (Friday, March 6) we have a student-free day. No students are required at school
on this day. This is an opportunity for staff to engage in some professional learning and we
continue our research into inquiry learning, again led by Marcia Behrenbruch from
Reshaping Schools Australia. This means that students will have a four-day weekend, given that
Monday (March 9) is a public holiday in Victoria.
Please take the time to read all parts of I giornale . You will find information that is important for you to know and it will also allow you to engage in the many events, celebrations, associations and learnings associated with St Anne’s College.
I hope that you will enjoy some ‘downtime’ with your family over the long weekend break.
