Junior Athletics success

On Thursday 14 November in very windy and chilly conditions the Junior Athletics team headed to the Domain Athletic Centre for the first of our inter-school carnivals, the Junior Southern Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (JSSATIS) carnival. The wind was a major factor in every event and everyone truly went one pace beyond with their amazing resilience and character. Everyone did their very best in such trying weather. Jess Smith not only had to battle her opponents in her 800m event but she also had to battle to stay on the track such was the strength of the gusts! They should all be very proud of their performances under those conditions.

Our team then competed last Friday 22 November in the rescheduled Southern Tasmania Catholic Primary Schools Sport Association (STCPSSA) Athletics Carnival – thankfully the weather was perfect! Our Year 5 100m runners took out a clean sweep in both carnivals with a first in their individual 100m races and then in the circular relay! Both Kate Jordan and I (Fiona Rhodes) are always immensely proud of our students and how they conduct themselves at all carnivals and on Friday they did not disappoint. Each competitor should be commended on their conduct and behaviour at both carnivals. Well done all. Sadly, for our Year 6 students it was their final primary inter-school carnival. We will miss them and wish them the very best for their coming Senior School years and beyond.

2019 State Basketball Tournament results

The St Mary’s College Senior School Basketball Teams had a brilliant weekend in Launceston at the State Basketball Tournament.

The Year 7-8 team qualified for the final but just couldn’t get a win over a very strong St Brendan-Shaw College outfit who boasted a number of State representatives.

In the Year 9-10 Girls Division, St Mary’s College defeated favourites St Brendan-Shaw College to earn a spot in the finals against old rivals, Marist Regional College. Unfortunately, they too were just too strong on the day and we finished runner ups.

Well done to both coaches, Nicole Read and Ashley Banks as well as all of the players for a great season of basketball! We are proud of the way you represented the school. A special thank you goes out to the parents for the time and effort they have put in over the last couple of weeks including the travel up to Launceston for the State Finals.

Bring on 2020!
