Bonjour! Welcome to French! This elective is filled with excitement and fun while we learn about the wonderful and fascinating French language! The first semester of the elective French in 2019 for the year 9/10s has been an adventure to say the least. We have experienced French culture and learnt about national festivals such as Bastille Day (France Day) and la fete de la Chandeleur (Pancake Day).

This semester we explored the wondrous world of France! While learning about French festivals, we also learnt about how to start and end conversations, talked about holidays and transportation and how to make small talk. In term 1 our whole French class travelled to Melbourne to experience some French culture by watching the classic comic book film “Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion”, and then explored the film in depth with a writing assessment task that compared the movie to the reality of French history.

In term 2 we continued learning about speaking to other people about our holidays by learning the French countries. We practiced this by creating a French conversation between two people then acting it out as part of an assignment.

French is a challenging subject because it is memory and pronunciation based, but it is rewarding because once you learn something you can say it to your friends and blow their minds. Our favourite part of French was participating in group activities and excursions.

We recommend French as an elective to other students because it is both relaxing and engaging. Throughout the semester you get to learn a variety of French topics through application and repetition. Learning French is helpful in the future as it leads to more opportunities and experiences. Learning French in high-school can lead to an exchange program, a career in teaching French or a better chance of international jobs.
