Principal's Report

Principal Report

While Corey Jewell has again been asked to step into a short term position at the North Eastern Metropolitan Region it has been my absolute privilege to be Acting College Principal these last three weeks.

Naplan results for our 7 and 9 students have arrived into the college and will be posted home to families shortly. Naplan results are reported as a mean scale score and by your child’s performance relating to the National minimum standard. This was the first year our students completed these tests on line. As a college, our results for 2019 were pleasing showing gains in several areas.

These last couple of weeks have been buzzing with activities and learning opportunities for our students and as this term draws to a close, it’s a timely reminder to families that Parent Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday 19 September. It is important for your child’s educational development that you attend, as it is the strong relationship between home and school that supports future educational growth and lays down the foundations of a positive connection to lifelong learning.

Professor John Hattie, world renowned researcher of Education based at Melbourne University, conducted as series of studies in 2009, into a variety of considerations which promote student achievement. As part of this study he found that, it is not only the teaching strategies and a schools approach to learning, have an impact on student development, but not surprisingly, that parents have a huge role to play alongside the school. Significantly, the highest effect regarding parental involvement occur where parents have high expectations for learning and achievement of their children. Attending parent teacher conferences with your child, provides an opportunity to verbalise and affirm these expectations in a productive way.

It is of interest to note, that the second most positive parental involvement to take is listening to your children read aloud, even in secondary school. Perhaps, when your child next says that they don’t have any homework for the night, you may ask them to read a few pages from their English novel to you.

Next week I am delighted to be attending the LSC Multi-Cultural Concerts which run from Wednesday to Friday evenings. I am looking forward to seeing many of our families there. I am confident we are all in for a real treat.
