Mad About Science!

Last Friday, the students in Grades 1 and 2, immersed themselves into the world of 'Science.'

The day involved several scientific activities including a virtual incursion with the team from ‘Mad About Science.’ Each class attended a zoom session and learned about the science behind some ‘magical’ phenomena in Harry Potter! Students made a bubbling potion, wrote a secret message that would only be revealed with heat and made a very strange “goo” that was both solid and liquid!

The presenter also showed us their crystal ball (a plasma ball) and explained how the electrons in the ball are attracted to touch. Amazingly the plasma ball is a small Tesla coil. If you touch the plasma ball, all of the electrons will go through you to the ground.

The basic message here is be careful with a plasma ball!

Before or after the incursion, students were involved in many other scientific activities. They created their very own Lava Lamp and chose 2 of the following challenges, where they created –

  • A roller coaster, or
  • A structure that could balance on their finger, or
  • A ramp, or
  • A car that could move without being touched, or
  • The longest paper chain ever from one piece of paper, or
  • A marble maze, or
  • A model of their home, or
  • A musical instrument that makes sound!

It was a fabulous science day, with a variety of learning activities and for all students across all classes, they expressed how much fun they had!

Here are some examples of the amazing experiments and creations made by the Grade 1 and 2 students on the day.

Mason's Lego farm, Judy's roller coaster and Lily's house (1AM):

Sam's lava lamp, Alex's marble maze, Georgie's lava lamp (1ET):

Sharon's roller coaster, Eva's maze and balance structure, Paige's paper chain (1JT):

Janson's lava lamp, Scarlet's marble maze, Hans' lava lamp, Chloe's lava lamp (1/2C):

2MC in the incursion with Ava, Jaeger and Madison creating their lava lamps (2MC):

2FB in the incursion, Caris' balancing structure, Liam's, Nathan's and Sophia's lava lamps and Claudia's goo (2FB):

Our onsite Grade 1 and 2 students - Elias, Lincoln, Chloe and Mufaddal, Abby, Evelyn and Harry having a blast!

Well done to all Grade 1 and 2 students ... future scientists in the making!
