Week 7 - Science Fun Friday (STEM Challenge)

On Friday 27th of August, Team Foundation students spent the entire day exploring STEM based activities. STEM stands for - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM education goes beyond school subjects. It gives a skill set that governs the way we think and behave. Merging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM education helps us to solve the challenges the world faces today.

Foundation students spent the entire day: building, mixing, designing, sticking, joining, cutting, co-operating and thinking creatively in order to solve a number of STEM challenges.

The children were given a selection of challenges to work on throughout the day.  See the table and images below to see what types of challenges the children were asked to solve on this day.

Once they tackled these STEM challenges, Foundation students were also invited to experience a chemistry activity where they could make their own fake snow out of bicarb of soda and hair conditioner. They enjoyed mixing these two ingredients together to form a substance that represented fluffy, white snow. Once these ingredients were mixed, some students created snow scenes with this substance.

As you can see from the attached photos the children thoroughly enjoyed these learning experiences and gained a greater understanding of the world around them.
