Girl Power in Engineering and IT

In 2019, I was selected to participate in Uni Melbourne’s ‘Girl Power in Engineering and IT’ program. The program runs over four years with various events each year enabling us to explore STEM. This year the program focused on mentoring opportunities with University of Melbourne engineering and IT students.

My mentor, Pooja, is studying Master of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne and aims to become a business analyst in future. She is from India and took on all the maths and science subjects in high school and is familiar with various coding languages. Her passion for the field of STEM continues and she is now a Student Ambassador for Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. I really enjoy catching up with Pooja to gain her insights into university life. My mentor is supportive and has my best interest at heart, she has been particularly helpful in guiding me to look ahead to the future and motivating me to achieving my goals.

A piece of advice she would give to anyone is: "Life is full of choices. Making one is difficult, but sometimes all you got to do is make it. Choices do decide your future, but remember you are the one making them. When you like neither of them, make a new one."

This mentoring program has been a wonderful experience in which I hope can form a long-lasting bond. I am so grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to continue throughout this year and next.

Inspiring STEM+ Program

On thr first day of term, Laing O’Rourke engineers visited to present the next module in the Inspiring STEM+ program. This time we looked at the use of digital technologies in the construction industry. This technology goes way beyond the 2d plans of a building. It allows you to walk around inside and get a feel for how the finished product is going to look.

Tech Girls

Four teams of students have been madly working to finish creating their apps, business plans, pitch and demo videos for the TechGirls competition 2021. The competition has run for the past 12 weeks and the work the students have put in at lunchtimes and at home has been amazing! The final product is due on Friday 6th of August so good luck to all teams in the competition.
