Investigating food sustainability

Leading into lockdown our Year 8 students were working on their Food Security and Food Sustainability Unit. As part of the course students were asked to consider the question ‘Is it realistic for us all to grow our own food? To help answer this question they were tasked with growing a food they could use in a recipe later in the year. Moving to remote learning has made this a little more challenging but some students have started to experiment at home with one of the three growing options; from an off cut, from seed pots given out by a supermarket chain and from heritage seeds.

Here’s a little of what’s happening at home.

Another component of this unit addresses the issue of food waste. This week in our virtual practical classes students have used a basic muffin recipe and ingredients they had at home to create their own muffin masterpieces.
