ACC Athletics 2020

Term 1 is a busy time in sport at the College with the focus being on Swimming and Athletics. The students have had an opportunity to participate in House Swimming Carnivals and the ACC Swimming Squad is in full training in preparation for the ACC Carnival on Thursday February 27.

 

Over the coming weeks, the focus will turn to Athletics. Some important dates to note are:

Friday February 14                 Junior Hackett Mile for Years 7 to 9 students (1500m)

Tuesday February 18             Senior Hackett Mile for Years 10 to 12 students

Thursday February 20          Senior House Athletics Carnival

Friday February 21                 Junior House Athletics Carnival

Tuesday February 25             Athletics training starts.

 

Athletics training will start in the week following the House Carnivals on Tuesday February 25. This year we will be conducting training two mornings per week for four weeks. Training will take place at the College from 7.30am to 8.15am and will be followed by breakfast.

Tuesday mornings will be for the TRACK athletes (sprints, hurdles and middle distance).

Wednesday mornings will be for the FIELD EVENTS (Shot put, Discus, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump).

 

There will also be two afternoon training sessions at the Dolomore Athletics track in Mentone on Thursday March 12 and March 19.  The ACC Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday March 25 at the Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park.

 

Meet the Coaches

This year the Squad will be coordinated by the Sport Performance Coordinator, Mr Radley and myself.

 

Sprints (100m, 200m, Hurdles) - Peter Fitzgerald and Nick Grech

Peter is an old boy of St Bede’s and represented Australia at the Montreal Olympics. Peter is a Level 4 Sprints and Hurdles coach and has coached many elite sprinters (including Olympic athletes) over his coaching career.

Nick was College Vice Captain and 1st XVIII captain in 2019. Nick is a member of the Mentone Athletics Club and has competed in every ACC Carnival throughout his time at St Bede’s. Nick has also competed at National level in the 200m, 400m and Long Jump.

 

Middle Distance (400m, 800m, 1500m) - Chris Murphy and Brendan Fordham

Chris has previously been the coordinator of the St Bede’s Athletics and Cross Country teams. He has been a long time member of the Glenhuntly Athletics Club and has competed in numerous middle and long distance events including a number of marathons. Brendan is an experienced runner who has competed in numerous fun runs and triathlons, including an ironman triathlon (3.8km swim, 180km bike ride followed by a marathon – 42.2km).

 

Long and Triple Jump – Kevin Rafferty and Nick Grech

Kevin has over 30 years experience in teaching Physical Education and various sports teams. As mentioned previously, Nick has competed in the Long Jump at National level.

 

Throws – Guy Martyn and Zoe Cunningham

Zoe is a member of the Mentone Athletics club and is a Level 2 coach. She currently competes in the heptathlon (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and the 800m). Guy has coached our throwers for the past few years and has got some great results.

 

High Jump – Wayne Dyball and Jessica Kirk

Wayne is an ATFCA & Athletics Australia accredited coach with 30+ years coaching experience - primarily with young athletes. He has Level 4 Jumps, Level 3 Throws, Level 3 Sprints, Hurdles & Relays qualifications. He was also the LAVic Junior Development Squad coach for 10 Years & Victorian team High Jump coach for the last 7 years. Has coached several National & International medalists. Jessica is a new member of staff and we wish her all the best in her first year coaching at St Bede’s.

 

This is another chance to get involved in the extra-curricular life at St Bede’s. Sprint training can improve your performance in many different sports and we encourage all boys to get involved.
