LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library...

Welcome back to Term 2, I hope you've all had a relaxing break and are looking forward to the term ahead. We have a busy term in the library coming up, starting with reading some special Anzac stories this week then moving onto a variety of activities based around non-fiction.

Each year I am always amazed at the way students engage with Anzac stories and I’m sure this year will be no different. K-2 will be learning about Anzac traditions and symbols by reading ‘Anzac Ted’ by Belinda Landsbury & ‘Anzac Biscuits’ by Phil Cummings. Stage 2 will be learning  about the origin of the Ode and The Last Post while also reading ‘My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day’ by Catriona Hoy. Stage 3 will be investigating the role some individuals play in our Anzac history, specifically looking at ‘The Last Anzac’ by Gordon Winch (Alec Campbell) & ‘Meet Weary Dunlop’ by Claire Saxby.

If you’re interested in listening to these stories and other Anzac books, don’t forget to visit Storybox Library and enjoy their great Anzac collection. Go to the website here, login using username: htsinverell, password: Inverell2360. Once logged in, scroll down the home page to the Anzac collection.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2021

We’re reading from space! Once again, our school is participating in the annual National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year is a little different as the chosen book ‘Give Me Some Space’ by Philip Bunting, is being read live from the International Space Station by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker on the 19 May 2021. Wow!

A few reminders:

  • Don’t forget that students need to have a library bag to borrow books
  • The Premier’s Reading Challenge is still going - it’s not too late to join as it doesn’t end until 20th August, 2021. For more information, please see your class teacher or email me on invlibrary@arm.catholic.edu.au
  • If your child cannot find their library books, keep looking as they often turn up in the strangest places. If they are gone forever, please send a note in with your child so I can remove them from our library system.
  • The library is open for borrowing before and after school and during snack break. Primary can come at snack at 1.30-1.50pm Monday to Friday (closed Wednesday) each week and to the Secondary on the same days at 2-2.20pm.
