3/4 Incursion - Healthy Rivers, Healthy Bays

As part of our inquiry unit called ‘Flushed Away’ 3/4C and 3/4MS had an incursion run by PrimeSci called ‘Healthy Rivers, Healthy Bays’. Here are some of our reflections and the facts that we learnt during the experience.

At school today we had an incursion. The incursion was based on water we drink, not polluting our rivers, oceans, lakes and creeks. Also, we learn about the flora and fauna that live in our water. My favourite part about the incursion was that we can learn  about the little water bugs. The incursion was great.

Today we did an incursion. I learnt a lot of new things, like I didn’t know that Bower Birds were attracted to blue things, 71% of the world is water and that waterbugs were real! I really liked looking at the waterbugs and all the different types. I also liked looking at the diorama model. Did you know that your t-shirt is made out of 2000 - 3000 litres of water? The people who were teaching us were named Jess and Emma.

“Oh, look at this one,” everybody says as they show everyone their spoon. 3/4C and 3/4MS were examining the water of Diamond Creek, and I don’t mean taking the water and looking at it. I mean taking bugs from the creek. You’re probably wondering why I mentioned the spoons. Well it is because we split up into two groups and could take the bugs out using spoons.

We just had an excursion about how much water we use, pollution and water creatures. There was this set up where it had a river and Jess squeezed green dye in places where pollution happens. We then got to spray the setup 20 times each as if it was raining. Then green dye and water rained into the bucket and it showed that the water now had pollution in it.

Today Emma and Jess came to our school to teach the 3/4s about water. Did you know that 71% of the earth’s surface is water and that only 1% of water is accessible to us? They also taught me that a t-shirt takes 2000-3000 liters of water to make.

Jess and Emma taught us lots about water and how we can save it. They also told us that 2,000 litres of water goes into our clothes. Did you know that the Earth is 71% of water and we can only reach 1% of water?
