AFL GALA DAY

On the 11th March, 23 students in Year 8 and 9 participated in the AFL schools cup (junior male division). The team consisted of a handful of students who had played AFL before with most students playing AFL for the first time. The aim of the day was to provide students with a ‘taste’ of AFL, whilst allowing students to display many of their natural talents from other sporting codes.

St Mary’s got off to a great start with three convincing wins over Redlynch SC, Bentley Park College and Trinity Bay SHS. After the lunch break St Mary’s blew many of their chances in front of goal and ended up with a draw against St Andrew’s CC. The final two matches ended up with a defeat from St Augustine’s and a narrow loss to Smithfield SHS.

There was an enormous amount of improvement displayed by all of the boys throughout the course of the day. A huge thank you to AFL Cairns and all of the organisers, umpires, managers and coaching staff for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students. We are already looking forward to next year's competition!
