A beach day with a difference

Year 10 Geography at Cronulla Beach

Year 10 Geography

by Khushi Kullar, Year 10

The topic we are studying in Geography is coastal management. The purpose of coastal management is to create awareness of natural processes, which may hinder and decrease the quality of our natural habitats; through harm minimization and problem solving many can tackle and reduce the effects. Through the prime example of Cronulla, we understand the processes and management strategies implemented along beaches; to reduce the effects of natural processes.

We undertook a practical analysis of Cronulla throughout the day, learning close-up the strategies and solutions for the surrounding area. An example was the walking trail we followed to reach the dunes. Walking up and down 8-meter dunes to foresee soil quality and vegetation. Upon walking, we encountered many protective strategies such as a set ball and chain path, restricted walkways, mesh netting and tall fencing.  Whereas the Wanda beach walk in contrast was viewed to have less vegetation and sand dunes, management strategies such as the Seabees Wall and protective fencing with signage.

The use of the fieldwork implemented vastly helped extend our understanding of the Cronulla and coastal management through close-up experience. Gaining ideas on how to minimise or resolve impacts decreasing or inundating the coast through community and council involvement.

We had a great day!
