Cluster & Endeavour Awards

The Term 2 Assembly was a wonderful occasion to recognise student endeavour, those who had improved, tried hard and given their all. All we can ask is for students to try their best. Those that do will see improvement. We do not expect that every single person will achieve at the highest level, we recognise that every person has unique gifts and talents. This is why we recognise endeavour. Application, consistently trying to do the best job possible and tenacity are valuable traits that most employers and universities also value. We were thrilled to have so many families join us for the assembly, families are always welcome to attend our major events and I thank all who made the effort to come along to join this celebration of student endeavour.

Congratulations to each of the students recognised at the assembly receiving an award. The list of recipients is included herein.

A few days following the assembly I received this letter from a family member who attended the award assembly:

I thank the concerned grandparent and welcome this letter. I am sharing this with families because the wearing of uniform is a shared responsibility. It is not just the College who is responsible for students’ wearing of uniform. Every single family is responsible for the uniform at Catholic Regional College.

It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child, we recognise that parents and families are in partnership with the College and are the primary educators of their children. Uniform and the wearing of uniform sends a message. Where young people are not educated in the societal expectations and standards, then they are less likely to pick up on these nuances when applying for employment and may think that the standard they have been able to get away with in front of others is the standard that is generally acceptable. Of course this can mean the difference between being successful in a job interview or not, due to appearance and presentation. We are working to prepare students for their unknowable futures. Schools can not do this alone. The responsibility for the education of these young people must be shared and in being shared we must commit to work cooperatively to ensure that each and every student understands that the way they wear the uniform is a reflection on the, their family and the College.

Students should not be leaving the family home if the uniform is not correct. The College can not control the kilt or skirt length when it has been altered. We can insist that a replacement is purchased when the uniform does not conform. This takes all parties, as I have stated, to work together. Blame and expectations that someone else is responsible is not what this is about. It is about caring enough to address a dysfunction so that the young person might truly understand the implications of their choices. It is an opportunity for education,  for the College to support families and for families to support the College – both working in true partnership.

We as a staff at the College are constantly addressing students on the issues of the wearing of uniform. We need the support and the help of each and every family.  Unless there is a whole community expectation, then staff can not hope to successfully address this issue. A former Mayor of New York City was adamant that it was the little things that lead to disorder and lawlessness. He was pedantic when it came to graffiti removal. As soon as it appeared, he would insist it was removed as he believed that if it were not then that would lead to littering then petty crime and so on. The psychology of this thinking was that if we let the small seemingly insignificant issues pass us by then we set a standard of acceptance. To accept and turn a blind eye to the first matter will then lead to turning a blind eye to a more serious matter and before a community would know it the things that were held most dear and valued by the community would be unrecognisable.

I ask not for your support but for your involvement. I ask not for raising concern but for you to work in partnership. We should address the issues as a community and I ask that each family is active in this community.

Uniform Consultation

The Catholic Regional College Federation of Colleges is looking to make some minor modifications to the style of the College uniform work across the CRC Colleges. The changes include the blazer material and the cut of the kilt to be more like a skirt without the pleats. Feedback is welcome and sought from families on these modifications. Students, parents and staff may all offer their comment on the proposed changes this month. Samples are on display in College reception.

2016 Premier's VCE Awards

Congratulations to Amanda Marriott who recevied a 2016 Premier’s VCE Award.

The Premier’s VCE Awards pays tribute to young Victorians who, with the support of their family and school, have completed their years at secondary school with distinction. This year, on Thursday 28 April at a prestigious presentation ceremony, 289 students from more than 100 schools across Victoria were recognised for  exceptional VCE scores in their respective studies. One of those outstanding students

was from your school.
