Orange News with a heart.
Transitioning into a new school was one of the many challenges Year 11’s faced at the start of 2016. Some may have found it daunting, others welcomed the idea with open arms. One thing everyone could agree on is that it was a fresh start for everyone; academically and socially. After a compelling first term, the second term began with the annual Cluster Retreats. In the increasingly busy school life of Catholic Regional College Sydenham’s students, it was not only important, but also necessary for students of the Chang cluster to escape the academic life of a student, and reflect on the core values that would equip us with the essential character to be adults who breath and celebrate the values of compassion, dignity and endeavor. It was of course, also a chance for members of the Chang cluster to get to know one another and form a family bond. Personally, Retreat was a positive experience for me, Retreat allowed me not only spend time reflecting on who I have become and who I want to be, but to also contemplate the growth the student body with whom I integrate on a daily basis.
Students who participated in the Retreat were invited to participate in a number of activities that promoted team building, reliance on their peers and trying new experiences. In other words, getting out of their comfort zone. I had the opportunity to participate in mountain-bike riding, raft building and high ropes all of which were a challenging, yet enjoyable experience. Aside from the physical activities, we all participated in liturgical activities enriched with reflection. Before we departed the campsite, we were all fortunate enough to listen to Michelle Newland’s empowering story of catastrophe, perseverance and ultimate triumph, which was so uplifting and inspiring to all of us. 2016 Chang Retreat is something which will stay with me forever and will be remembered by all of those who participated. I would like to extend my thanks to Paul Reed, our Chang Cluster coordinators Esther and Nathan for organising the Retreat and all of Chang’s wonderful teachers who supported not only the Retreat, but the students who took part in what was a pleasurable and remarkable experience.
Cluster Feast Day was an opportunity for the Chang Cluster to unite and to celebrate and embrace our Cluster values. The day began with a mass where students of Chang participated in readings and ministering the music. The guest speaker, James Mulligan, an ex-Western Bulldogs football player shared his journey as a footballer and how that affected his personal life. Although, it was his first public speaking, many were inspired by his story through the realism as his success in life was achieved through the courage and the numerous endeavours he overcame. Finally the day ended with Cluster activities, with Chang being successful in many of the events. However, it was the contribution of students that made the day a success.
Chang has had a very good start to this year. We began by scoring high totals in tee ball, both in runs and participation. We came third by only one point putting us in a very good position in the O'Reilly Shield tally. We have also had a number of participants in our SACCSS sports. Our highlights include Gianna Atienza from C5 who was extremely strong and successful swimmer winning the 17 year individual champion at the SACCSS Swimming Carnival. With our success in Cluster Sport combined with our high participation in SACCSS sports we are currently in equal first position with Bradman on 160 points. Overall Chang is looking very strong for the upcoming events and hopefully taking the lead for the O'Reilly Shield.
