Deputy Principal's News

Dear Families,
As I reflect on this first term I can say that beginning my Deputy Principal journey here at St James has been an absolute pleasure. The term has been filled with many opportunities for student and staff learning and getting to know the school community. I look forward to next term and continuing my journey here at the school.
Mix it Up Day
The Year 6 Leaders did an outstanding job in organising and facilitating activities catering for cross age groups. The students moved through 5 organised activities. It demonstrated the leadership qualities the students at St James develop over time, and how we can learn from each other. The day was a credit to Mrs Herbert and her Year 6 Leaders. Thank you to all the parents who assisted in any activity associated throughout the week.
Merricks
The school camp in Merricks was most enjoyable. There were many opportunities for our students in years 5 and 6 to engage in outdoor / beach activities. It was great to see the smiles on students faces even when their boogie boards slipped out from beneath them and they were washed out. The laughter indicated just how much fun was being had.
SRC
Last week the SRC reps from each grade attended their first meeting facilitated by Emma Herbert, Lois White from Mini Vinnies and myself. The students learnt about mini Vinnies then were presented with a mini Vinnies badge. The following image shows how students can come together, collaborate and join together to make a difference.
All students were presented with a mini vinnies badge at the meeting. If they were absent they will receive their badge at the next meeting. Meetings are scheduled fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon.
Lunch boxes - Lost property
There are many unnamed and unclaimed lunch boxes, drink bottles and school uniforms in the lost property cupboard. Please look in the cupboard for any missing items. Anything left in the cupboard at the end of the term will be donated or binned before the commencement of Term 2. This is also a timely reminder to clearly label any student property which comes to school, especially lunch boxes and drink bottles.
PA Fundraising activities
Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who have assisted with the many fundraising activities this term, we greatly appreciate your time and help and all that you do to make the school a better place for the students to learn in. Just a reminder that if you would like to assist in any sports, school activities and or classroom helper programs, you will require an up to date WWCC and will need to have signed off on the Volunteer Code of Conduct which was sent via Caremonkey at the beginning of the school year. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or send an email through to info@stjamesbrighton.catholic.edu.au.
School Community
Thank you to everyone in our school community who contribute in big or small ways to help many great activities come to life. From cooking sausages to wrapping Easter prizes to sending along donations for fundraising activities. You are all so generous with your time, thank you.

Here are a few reminders for Term 2
Term 2 commences on Tuesday 23rd April.
Winter Uniforms
It is optional for the students to begin wearing their winter uniform from the beginning of term 2. All students will need to be wearing their full School Winter Uniform by Week 3 - Monday 6th May. Weather permitting, School Hats will not be required during Terms 2 and 3.
NAPLAN will take place here at school for the students in Year 3 and 5 commencing Tuesday 14th May - Thursday 16th May. Students will be sitting the NAPLAN paper test. Please see the attached information flyer for further information including times and content areas assessed. Where students are sitting 2 tests on the day, tests will be scheduled so that one will take place before play and one after. In the event that your child is unable to attend a NAPLAN test, please advise in writing prior to or on the morning of (email: info@stjamesbrighton.catholic.edu.au)
Any students who are absent on the day may be eligible to sit a catch up test depending on staffing and time. Students are not permitted to sit 3 or more tests on any given day. Please remember that NAPLAN is only a snapshot of where students are at.
As we end the week and head into a well earned break for students and staff, I would like to wish all families a safe and happy holiday time.
Enjoy the holiday and especially family time during Easter.
See you all back next term.

(Deputy Principal)
