Year 9 Physical Education Electives

Active Girls (Girls ONLY)

Female students will focus on participation in competitive and non-competitive sports as well as recreational activities. They will analyse different health areas including physical, emotional and social health and the process of maintaining and improving these areas throughout different stages of their lives. Students will explore the meaning of being healthy and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Students will investigate the different components of fitness and how to improve these. They will explore the benefits of participating in regular, moderate and vigorous physical activity.

 

Beating the Zone

Beating the Zone provides students the opportunity to participate in a highly competitive environment to refine their skills and decision making under pressure. They will be expected to participate at a high intensity to best emulate an elite sporting environment and push to improve their fitness levels. Students will further their knowledge of tactics through playing and analysis. Students will be required to look into the tactics used in elite level sports such as AFL, NBA, hockey and cricket and implement these into their own game play. Students will be assessed on both their physical performance and assignment based activities.

 

Coaching & Umpiring

Students will explore the role of a coach and the role of an umpire. They will be given the opportunity to gain experience and enhance their knowledge whilst coaching and umpiring their peers in various sports. Students will also complete a coaching project and will be responsible for planning, organising and running a practical session. They will have the opportunity to coach various sport teams at The Lakes and to be involved in the Early Years Physical Education program. To enhance their understanding of coaching and umpiring, we will discuss making decisions and being a fair referee. There is a potential to become qualified, which may lead to a possible part time job.

 

 

Fundamentals of Fitness (Boys ONLY)

Students will begin by exploring the components of fitness, with a focus on cardio vascular endurance, muscular endurance, speed, agility and coordination. An emphasis will be placed on how the fitness components specifically relate to sport and physical education. Training methods are identified to improve their fitness level and their ability to participate in sports and other activities. Students are also introduced to basic anatomy, exploring the movement, structure and function of the bones and muscles and sports injuries in the human body. Students are involved in peer teaching a variety of sports. Students will continue to develop their skills in a variety of invasive games such as ultimate Frisbee, handball, soccer and touch football focusing on moving into space, team strategies and the importance of communication during a game.

 

Minor Games- Advanced

Students will participate in various sports and strategy games, which will include volleyball, netball, ultimate Frisbee, handball and golf. There will be a focus on skill refinement and game awareness as well as a focus on increasing the proficiency of complex movement and manipulative skills. Students will be required to reflect and evaluate their tactics strategically, collaborate with team members and implement team plans into a game situation.

 

Outdoor Education (Incurs an additional fee of $100)

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of adventure activities that will test their ability to push themselves. These activities may include canoeing, surfing, hiking, high ropes and wheelchair sports. Students will gain valuable leadership experience and will be involved in a variety of community activities. They will also be expected to participate in basic first aid and coaching courses. This elective would be a great flow on for either VCE Outdoor Education or VCE Sport and Recreation.
