Social Justice Day
A great day was had by all!
Friday 9th February saw the launch of our first Social Justice Day. As a school, we took part in activities that introduced us to the Catholic Social Teachings using CARITAS as our inspiration. These social teachings are embedded in the Gospel and through the Gospel, Jesus calls us to work together to contribute towards a just and fair world.
Project Compassion
Last Wednesday each family should have received a project compassion box. Please give generously to an organisation that helps those less fortunate by teaching them and empowering themselves to provide for their families. Each week, CARITAS shows us an example of how our generosity can help others. This week, we meet Janaki, a young entrepreneur from Nepal, who has turned her life around. Growing up in a world of poverty and disadvantage, coupled with a forced marriage at the age of 12, she was in a very vulnerable position. Even more so when her husband died just two years into their marriage. She’s now running her own successful sewing business and has become an inspirational community leader.

In week 2 of the Campaign, we are introduced to Rattanak, a skilled young barber, living an independent life in rural Cambodia. But it wasn’t always that way. As a child he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation at home, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty.
His sister discovered the Deaf Development Program (DDP), run by Caritas Australia partner, Maryknoll Cambodia. It provides sign language, job training and interpreting services to people aged 16 and over who are deaf or hard of hearing and aims to raise awareness about deafness in the hearing community.
