Principal's message

Dear MGSC community

The Aerobics teams put on a Showcase for families and staff on Monday 9th of May in the auditorium.  This was the first time that the teams and solists had performed live this year and it was just ahead of the Roweville Regional Competition on Sunday 15th May.  Take a look at the article on their achievements in this edition of the newsletter.

The Vocal Night held on the Wednesday 11 May was also a great success last week.  Students from across all year levels performed in solo, duets or groups.  The All Star Choir and the Madrigal featured guest artists Wendy Harvey, Tim Veevers and Jaynen Yong as well as the percussionist students. My thanks to Blanka West who is the voice coach for all of our students.

The last of our House carnivals ran last week – the Cross Country. It was terrific to see the students get involved in this. With Ilana Parker and Lisa Kosack’s leadership in this area, the importance of fitness in our daily lives is highlighted.

The PFA ran a sausage sizzle at Bunnings on Saturday 12 May to raise funds for the school. They raised just shy of $2,000 on the day (after outgoings) which is really impressive. There is another sausage sizzle planned for election day.  It is great to see the PFA extending their reach for the school community.  Not only does this raise funds for the school but it also promotes our school community. This weekend they will be putting on another sausage sizzle at the school on polling day.  I give my thanks to them for being so entrepeneurial and raising funds for school related programs and activities.

The Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN tests commenced last week.  We have had huge numbers of student absences (approximately a third each day) therefore catch up sessions will continue running all of this week.

The Wellbeing Team have organised a day of celebration to mark IDAHOBIT (international day against homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia) on Tuesday 17 May . A cause close to our heart in wellbeing. Students and staff  were asked to wear something rainbow to school to show their support to fellow students.

It now gives me pleasure to announce that the library upgrade that I referred to in a prior newsletter has been completed and it looks terrific. It brings a lot of light into the library foyer and the library space whilst also accommodating our Inclusion Team.

Finally, I have some very exciting new to announce. The School Council has endorsed the business case for the construction of a Wellness Centre near the rear/Charman Road car park. The Wellness Centre will be a multi-functional building for school and community activities to take place like dance and movement classes, yoga, meditation and reflection and group wellbeing sessions.

It will have 80m square multipurpose room studio space with a sprung floor for dancing and aerobics, a kitchen, shower and change rooms, toilet facilites, a covered deck, meeting room and storage room.  The Wellness Centre is a school-funded project, meaning that we fund this ourselves from revenue from the hire of facilites over many years. I believe that student and staff wellbeing is of the utmost importance and that this space will build on the program that we already offer.

Take care.
