English Overview - Term Two

In Reading, students have been working hard at building their reading stamina. We have been looking at and discussing what reading stamina is, what it looks like and what it is not. Students have then had he opportunity during independent reading sessions to practice and build their reading stamina. In InitiaLit comprehension and fluency lessons students have been looking at the reading strategies of predicting and connecting and completing InitiaLit activities linked to these strategies.

In Writing, students have been learning the features and structure of persuasive texts using InitiaLit texts as examples. We have also been busy in our InitiaLit 2 spelling lessons learning new concepts and tricky words, which are also being added to our tricky word wall.

Students loved reading the text 'Zoo' last week and writing their syllable poems about a Zoo animal of their choice.

Swimming and Cross Country

During the past few weeks, Year Two students have actively participated in the whole school Cross Country and the swimming program. Well done to everyone who participated in these events!

Take Home Readers and Spelling Books

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them the following Monday. After reading, please record the name of the book and the length of time reading in the student diary for the day.

InitiaLit-2 suggests students practice spelling words at home each week. These spelling words will reinforce the words used in the classroom program. Instructions for the Spelling book are on the front cover of the Spelling book.

Tissues

Thank you to those families that have sent along a box of tissues to be used in your child's classroom. We would love for you to consider sending one in if you are yet to do so.
