What a busy few weeks we have had in PE!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:  To conclude the term our Foundation students continued to refine, practise and develop their Fundamental Movement and Overarm Throwing skills.

We spent two weeks progressing through the Overarm through with each week looking to extend the students learning. This was achieved through building accuracy and confidence with throwing a variety of different shaped objects. By doing this, students realised the importance of whether they needed to throw something hard or softer to achieve the desired accuracy.

The Foundation students also completed their second health task for the semester which focused on drawing emoji's to reflect different emotions. This enabled students to understand what it might look like to others and themselves if they are feeling a particular way.

Year One/Two: The focus over the last period of weeks for the Level 1 and 2 students has been to conclude their unit on the underarm throw technique. The progress the students displayed was wonderful to see and should be proud of their efforts.

Over the last two weeks we begun the overarm throw unit by watching some visual demonstrations of the skill being put into practise. This gave the students an idea of the stance and steps required to execute this throwing style.

As the students grew in confidence, we set up targets around the gym for them to practise their throwing accuracy. We grew their learning to incorporate the Indigenous game Borna Joke which promotes the use of overarm throwing.

Moving forward we will continue to refine and grow the students confidence to consistently use the overarm throw.

Year Three/Four: over the last few weeks our Level 5-6 students and completed their Athletics field unit.

We returned to the unit with High Jump being our first lesson. Students were required to complete three jumps using either the Fosbury Flop or the scissor kick technique. It was great to see the students correct their technique from jump to jump.

Our next lesson focused on both Shot Put and Discus. Each event utilising a different throwing style.  During these events, the student's gross motor skills/movements were called upon to execute  the throw.

And in our last lesson we learned about the body's anatomy. The focus was both on the body's bones and muscles. Students had to label two blank different human body templates. The first looking at naming the main bones e.g. femur in the body and the second the main muscles e.g. bicep and quadricep.

USPS House Cross County:

On Friday May 13th, we hosted our school house colour Cross Country event. The weather did not look promising in the morning but we aimed to push on and complete the event regardless. The students demonstrated a great level of resilience by persisting to run through the wet conditions.

To see all of the student's dress in their house colours was fantastic but none more so than the team spirit that was on display. The cheering and encouragement coming from around the course was a true indicator of the great community spirit we have at USPS.

I am so proud of each student who participated in the event, whether you ran, jogged or walked.

To the students who progressed through to the next stage on Friday 20th May, congratulations. We wish you the best of luck!

Lastly, thank you to all of the parents and family members who came to support on the day, we really appreciate it.

Congratulations again to all involved, you are all superstars!

District Cross Country:

OnFriday 27th May, 49 students represented USPS at the District Cross Country event. I think I speak on behalf of our community in saying we are proud of each students effort on the day. We had some fantastic results come out of the day with 19 students progressing to the next stage. These students will now progress to the Division stage on 7th June at Yarra Valley Racecourse. We wish these students the best of luck.

The team spirit that was on display was fantastic to watch and be a part of. The students should all be commended on this.

A special thank you to all the family members who came to support on the day. This is why I rate our school community the best.

Once a again, good luck to those students who will run on June 7.
